This work was commissioned by Bill Colleran. It was first performed by David Alberman on 19th November 2005, at St Paul's Hall, Huddersfield, as part of the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

The Sharp End Of Night was written especially for David Alberman by way of an enormous thank you for his breathtaking playing and acting in the composer's music theatre piece Who put Bella in the Wych Elm? (2003). The music is derived entirely from the Violin part of that work.
