James Kazik | Hal Leonard James Kazik James Kazik has been a staff arranger for the U.S. Army Band (“Pershing’s Own”) since 2001, and a staff writer for Hal Leonard Corporation since 2008. Richard Peaslee | Hal Leonard Richard Peaslee Richard Peaslee was born in New York City and received his undergraduate degree in Music Composition from Yale University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he received both a diploma and a Master of Science degree from The Juilliard School, in addition to studying privately with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and William Russo in New York and London. Peaslee has served on the faculty of the Lincoln Center Institute and New York University’s Music Theatre Program and is a former board member of The American Composers Orchestra and Jobs For Youth. He serves on the board of American Opera Projects and SCAN New York. A retrospective on his career was presented by Lincoln Center’s Composers’ Showcase at Alice Tully Hall. His concert works have been widely performed by orchestras, chamber ensembles, and soloists, most notably the Philadelphia, Detroit, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and Buffalo Symphony Orchestras. His concerto for trombone, Arrows of Time, was premiered by the Seattle Symphony. Awards include The American Academy of Arts and Letters Marc Blitzstein Award; Obie and Villager Awards; as well as NEA and NYFA Fellowships. Richard Peaslee's music is published by Margun Music, a division of G. Schirmer, Inc. Boosey and Hawkes, E.C. Paris Rutherford | Hal Leonard Paris Rutherford Paris Rutherford is considered one of the top vocal jazz arrangers in the country today. His arrangements focus carefully on singability in the lyric and voice leading, and are crafted to bring an unusual touch to the music. Mr. Rutherford is Professor in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas, where he directs the award-winning UNT Jazz Singers and teaches courses in jazz arranging, song writing, and broadcast music. He also heads the degree program in vocal jazz. Under Rutherford's direction, the Jazz Singers have performed for the International Association for Jazz Education, Music Educators National Conference, American Choral Directors Association, and many jazz festivals around the country, as well as for the summer vocal jazz workshop, held annually on the UNT campus. Their recordings are heard on six CDs. Paris Rutherford brings a wealth of experience to his vocal jazz writing. A former member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Summer Musicals (trombone), and long experience as performer, composer and producer in the recording studios of Dallas, Los Angeles, London, England, and Cologne, Germany, his arrangements reflect the diversity of those varied activities. He is in demand as a clinician in vocal jazz, both as a director and as a writer. Michael Abene | Hal Leonard Michael Abene Michael Abene is a composer, arranger, keyboard player and record producer. Michael joined the Maynard Ferguson band while still a teenager and was responsible for writing some of the most-requested arrangements, such as "Green Dolphin Street," "Airegin," "Fox Hunt," "Chicago," "Whisper Not," "Knarf" and "Cherokee." Michael produced the Grammy-winning projects "Digital Duke" featuring the Duke Ellington Orchestra and "The GRP All-Star Big Band-All Blues." He produced the Grammy-nominated "GRP All-Star Big Band" and "The GRP All-Star Big Band Live" and received nominations in the arranging category for all three big band records. Other projects he has produced are "The GRP Christmas Collection Volumes 1, 2 and 3" (Volume 1 was awarded a gold record for sales of 500,000 units), "Happy Anniversary, Charlie Brown," two projects for Billy Taylor, "... It's a matter of pride" and "Homage," "Maiden Voyage" for Nnenna Freelon plus projects for Billy Cobham, Eddie Daniels and Dave Valentin. Some of the other artists Michael has composed and arranged for are Take 6, Joe Lovano, Bireli Lagrene, Montreal fusion bassist Alain Caron, Dick Oatts, Dave Grusin, for which he received a 1998 Grammy nomination for the arrangement of "America" from "Dave Grusin Presents West Side Story," Chick Corea, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Liza Minnelli, Charles Aznavour, Dave Taylor, Ronnie Cuber, Diva, the Metropole Jazz Orchestra in the Netherlands and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Michael has also appeared as featured pianist and arranger/composer with the UMO Jazz Orchestra in Helsinki, WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany, the Rotterdam Conservatory Big Band (The Netherlands), Jazz Big Band Graz (Austria), Kluvers Big Band (Denmark) and the BBC Big Band in England. Michael also has produced and arranged for many singers, from pop and crossover artists Patti Austin and B.B. King, to classic jazz artists Grady Tate, Joe Williams, Chris Connor, New York Voices and Diane Schuur. Two works of Michael's were premiered during the summer of 2000: a piece he arranged for The Metropole Jazz Orchestra for seven trombones where each trombonist contributed an original and Michael composed opening and connecting sections allowing the piece to be played as a suite. This composition was performed at the International Trombone Festival in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The second composition was an original work commissioned by The Mancini Institute, where Michael has appeared as composer-in-residence, for bass trombonist Dave Taylor entitled "Heritage: New/Old and Then Some" and performed by The Mancini Institute Orchestra and Big Band. This work has also been performed by The Manhattan School of Music Studio Jazz Orchestra and in 2004 by The Amsterdam Conservatory Orchestra and Big Band. Two new compositions by Michael premiered in 2003 were "Odyssey for Brass," commissioned and performed by The Metropole Jazz Orchestra in Tilburg, The Netherlands and "Fragmentations" performed by the Slovenian Symphony and Radio Big Band. In the fall of 2003 Michael was appointed Musical Director, Principal Composer/Arranger of the WDR Radio Big Band of Cologne, Germany. Because of the response worldwide, Michael has made his compositions and arrangements available to schools and bands and serves as a clinician, and is currently working on his own 11-piece band consisting of two trumpets, french horn, tenor and bass trombone, three reeds and rhythm section. Michael joined the faculty of Manhattan School of Music in January 1998. In 2001 Michael was instrumental in creating a course entitled "Jazz Composition and Arranging for The Studio Orchestra" and in 2003, a Doctoral in Jazz program. Stephen Bulla | Hal Leonard Stephen Bulla Stephen Bulla began his musical instruction at age 6, growing up in a musical household where his father played tuba and his mother played piano. He eventually graduated Magna Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied trombone with Phil Wilson and Composition/Arranging with Herb Pomeroy. In 1980 he won an audition for the position of Staff Arranger to "The President's Own" United States Marine Band and Chamber Orchestra in Washington DC. For the next thirty years he would provide musical scores for a myriad of White House events, beginning with the Reagan era until 2010. Working alongside film score legend John Williams he has transcribed music from "Star Wars," "Catch Me If You Can," and "Close Encounters" for performances by the Marine Band with the composer conducting. These arrangements are now published for wind band by Hal Leonard Corporation. He has also scored music for the Discovery Channel (“Wings of the Luftwaffe” and “Century of Flight”) and PBS television series “In Performance At The White House”. On those occasions his arrangements were performed by Sarah Vaughan, The Manhattan Transfer, Mel Torme, Doc Severinsen, Nell Carter, Shirley Jones, Larry Gatlin, and Jordan Sparks. His commissioned concert works are performed and recorded internationally. The Dutch, British, Swiss and New Zealand Brass Band Championship organizations have all commissioned test pieces from his pen. Ishbah Cox | Hal Leonard Ishbah Cox Ishbah Cox Ishbah Cox is Assistant Professor of Bands at Purdue University, Founder/Director of the Purdue University Brass Choir, Director of the Symphonic and Collegiate Bands, Director of the Boiler Box Band (Women’s Volleyball), and Assistant Director of the “All-American” Marching Band (AAMB). As one of the arrangers for the "Al-American" Marching Band at Purdue University, his marching/pep band arrangements have been performed before national audiences, at Purdue athletic events, and at a Bands of America Marching (BOA) Finals Exhibition Performance by the Purdue AAMB Trombone Section. Cox is in demand as a festival adjudicator, clinician, and conductor. He has adjudicated concerts, marching, and solo and ensemble festivals for the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) and has served as a consultatn and clinician in numerous Indiana schools and for music programs including the Metropolitan Nashville, Chicago, Mobile, and Atlanta Public School systems. Cox has conducted a number of groups, including the Kokomo Park Band, the Lafayette Symphony's Youth Orchestra and the Purdue University Wind Ensemble, and guest conducted the Purdue Philharmonic Orchestra on their 2011 Eastern European Tour. He has guest conducted the middle Tennessee State University and Auburn University Honor Bands, the Indiana Bandmasters Association Regional and District Honor Bands, the Northern Illinois University Wind Ensemble, and University of South Alabama Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. David Lantz III | Hal Leonard David Lantz III David Lantz III is originally from Mountain Lake, New Jersey. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. His major instrument was the trombone. He has taught music in all grade levels from K-college, including high school band, chorus, and music theory, junior high school general and choral, and elementary general and choral. Currently, he teaches at East Stroudsburg High School South, where he directs two concert choirs, jazz/show choir, and a select chorale. In addition to choral activities, Dave has developed three levels of music theory, which have contributed a great deal to the success of the choral program. Also, David is the choral director at Stroudsburg United Methodist Church and director of Pocono Summer Chorus, a community chorus in the Pocono Mountains. David is a freelance studio bass player and vocalist, having also played extensively in many resorts and clubs in the tri-state area, both with his own band and with other musicians. While not teaching or playing, he fills his spare time with music publishing activities, including editing, engraving, arranging and composing choral music and occasionally conducting choral reading sessions. He has nearly 300 choral octavos in print with Shawnee Press as well as many other publishers throughout the United States. David is a member of PMEA and ACDA. As a member of ASCAP, he has won many writers awards. David resides in Sciota, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Marti Lunn Lantz (also a published composer and lyricist) and six children. John Wasson | Hal Leonard John Wasson John Wasson is an award-winning performer, composer, arranger and conductor with a diversity of experiences in the music business. Born in 1956 and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, John studied at the University of North Texas where he earned degrees in Music Theory and Trombone Performance, and played for 3 seasons in the acclaimed One o’clock Lab Band with which he toured throughout the US and Europe and appeared on four recordings. He has also been a member of the Woody Herman and Stan Kenton Orchestras and was a charter member of the Dallas Brass. As a composer and arranger, John’s music has been heard around the world in a variety of settings from his arrangement of Caravan heard in the final scene of the Academy Award-winning motion picture “Whiplash” to his orchestrations performed by the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Dallas Winds, and the Carolina Crown Drum Corps. He has also been the primary composer and arranger of the Dallas Brass for over 35 years. As a commercial composer and producer, John has created music for such clients as the Ken Burns American Heritage Prize, National Geographic, The United Way, Electronic Data Systems, the Salvation Army and Zola Levitt Ministries. Many of his compositions and arrangements appear in the catalogs of several publishers including Hal Leonard, C. L. Barnhouse, Alfred Music, and Praise Charts. John currently directs the Jazz Ensembles and teaches Music Theory, Composition and Arranging at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Select a boy with charisma and charm, who is comfortable on stage. He should be a great actor, an average singer, and an average mover. You'll also want to cast a boy with a changed voice. For your sanity, make sure you cast someone who memorizes lines easily and has a good sense of musical rhythm. Your Harold should look good with your Marian and the two together should exude a spark of excitement. Gender: Male Vocal Range: G5 - B3 Marian Paroo The role of Marian is a different twist on the traditional leading lady. The character progresses greatly during the show, starting as an uptight librarian and transforming into a beautiful and trusting young woman. Your Marian must have an amazing voice, be an excellent actor, and be able to move well. She must also have an air of confidence that draws Harold and your audience to her. She will also need to be comfortable kissing two boys-Harold and Charlie Cowell, which requires a certain amount of emotional maturity. Finally, take some time during auditions to try different pairs of Harolds and Marians until you reach the perfect match. Vocal Range: G5 - G3 Charlie Cowell Charlie Cowell is one of the premium acting-only roles. Consider having the actor playing Charlie perform in the ensemble or as a teen dancer or townsperson-just make sure it's clear he's NOT playing Charlie Cowell in those scenes. Cast a strong actor with a good loud voice who is a bit of a ham and likes being on the stage. He has to be comfortable kissing Marian, and should have a good sense of comic timing. Charlie is a good choice for an understudy to Harold Hill. Gender: Male Mayor Shinn You may be tempted to cast an "over-the-top" actor as Mayor Shinn, but resist and heed the warning of Meredith Willson. The actor playing Mayor Shinn certainly needs a good sense of comic timing, but should be able to perform the role very seriously. This is elemental in creating the humor of The Music Man JR., which is based in reality. Mayor Shinn does not have to sing or dance, but he is responsible for a great deal of the pacing and line pick up in the show. Make sure your actor can memorize long monologues. Gender: Male Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn Everybody wants to play Eulalie. It's a great role for a great comic actress. Again heed Mr. Willson's warning and avoid casting an actress who is over the top. If Eulalie takes herself seriously your audience will find her hysterical. Eulalie does have some singing and some dancing, or at least posing. Make sure your Eulalie works with your Mayor Shinn. Gender: Female Vocal Range: D5 - D4 Marcellus Washburn This classic sidekick to Harold has been immortalized by comedic greats like Buddy Hacket. Marcellus' big number is "Shipoopi" so the character has to act well, sing reasonably well (although a character voice is best) and be able to dance. Cast the kid who is just funny all the time and you'll have a great Marcellus. Gender: Male Vocal Range: D#5 - E4 Ethel Toffelmier Ethel is Marcellus's girlfriend. She's described by Marcellus as "a nice comfortable girl and the bosses' niece." Ethel has some acting, some singing, and some dancing. Ethel is also one of the solo Pick-a-Little ladies. Make sure she and Marcellus look good together, think Ethel and Fred from I Love Lucy! Gender: Female Vocal Range: D5 - D4 Mrs. Paroo Mrs. Paroo is the conscience of River City. She is a great mother, stands up for what she believes in, and gently pushes Marian to think of her future. The role requires an actress who can do a good Irish Brogue, and who can sing and act. She should also look right with Marian and Winthrop. Gender: Female Vocal Range: Eb5 - Ab3 Winthrop Paroo Winthrop should appear to be young, his voice must be unchanged and he should be a good actor. Winthrop also needs to be able to affect a believable lisp. Winthrop has to transform from a shy child to an outspoken child who not only sings but dances! Gender: Male Vocal Range: Eb5 - C4 Amaryllis Amaryllis is the slightly bratty girl who studies piano with Marian. Amaryllis should be a good actor, and roughly the same size as Winthrop and Gracie. Just who are Amaryllis' parents is one of the great mysteries of The Music Man JR. and something for you to decide. Gender: Female Ewart Dunlop Ewart is one of the four quartet members with the second highest voice or tenor. He is married to Maud Dunlop. Cast singers who can hold their own vocal parts strongly and worry about the acting later. Gender: Male Vocal Range: F#5 - E4 Oliver Hix Oliver is one of the four quartet members with the second lowest voice or baritone. He is married to Alma Hix. Cast singers who can hold their own vocal parts strongly and worry about the acting later. Gender: Male Zaneeta Shinn Zaneeta should be your best female dancer. The role is often given dance features in both "76 trombones" and "Shipoopi". Zaneeta also should look like she belongs in the Shinn Family, although this is not necessary. Zaneeta gets to deliver the classic "Ye gads" line! Gender: Female Gracie Shinn Gracie is Zaneeta's little sister. This role has one or two lines of dialogue and traditionally is the first soloist in "Wells Fargo Wagon." Gracie can also understudy Amaryllis in case of an emergency. Since THE MUSIC MAN JR. is about a town, you'll want to assign your cast into family units. Try to create a realistic town with married folks, single folks, etc. If you have an abundance of girls, cast a few as widows. Ask each family to create a family history, including details of their lives. By doing this you will create an ensemble that is engaged and energized and this will greatly add to the quality of your production! The adults have a few lines (which you can distribute while blocking the scenes.) They also have some solo vocal lines. You'll also want to select the Farmer and His Wife from this group. Gender: both Traveling Salesmen You'll want to cast several good actors to play traveling salesmen, especially salesmen number five, number three, and number one. If you find it necessary to cast girls as traveling salesmen make sure they play the roles as men. Gender: both Teen Dancers Create a group of teen dancers by selecting your best dancers. The Teen Dancers will be responsible for "Shipoopi," and have features in "76 Trombones." Make sure each Teen Dancer is assigned to a family to create the illusion of a real town. Gender: both Wa Tan Ye Girls All of your little girls can play Wa Tan Ye Girls. They are featured during Eulalie's "Spectacle" just prior to "76 Trombones." Again assign them to families.
