Hal Leonard Names Joseph Martin Director of Sacred Publications for Shawnee Press

MILWAUKEE - Hal Leonard Corporation has announced Joseph Martin as the director of sacred publications for Shawnee Press, the acclaimed choral and instrumental music publishing company it acquired in June. Martin will be responsible for the overall publishing for the church market, for Shawnee and its prestigious imprints such as Harold Flammer Music, GlorySound and Mark Foster Music. He will report to Emily Crocker, vice president of choral publications for Hal Leonard.

A North Carolina native, Martin earned his bachelor's degree in piano performance from Furman University in South Carolina and his master's from the University of Texas at Austin, where he subsequently taught piano pedagogy.

He began his career at Shawnee in 1993, working his way up from the church music marketing department to become the effective face of the company, concertizing and conducting clinics and conferences for church musicians throughout North America. He has earned a devoted following for his compositions and arrangements, and has more than 1,000 titles to his credit.

Along with Mark Hayes and David Angerman, Martin co-authored Shawnee's Keys for the Kingdom, a fully graded, progressive piano method for Christian students. His other major works include 27 choral cantatas and Song of Wisdom, a choral tone poem based on the bestselling children's book Old Turtle.

His first solo piano recording, American Tapestry, was nominated for a Dove Award. This album and his other recordings are enormously popular in both sacred and secular markets. Martin has recorded for Yamaha's Disklavier series, and has composed hundreds of commissioned works. He will continue to reside in Austin with his wife and two children.

Martin says, "I'm elated to be on board with Shawnee as it continues and grows its legacy of excellence as part of Hal Leonard. The editorial staff is eager to tap the resources of Hal Leonard, to expand our creative vision, streamline our procedures, and reach more musicians than ever before. I truly believe that the best days are ahead for Shawnee Press."

Crocker comments, "Joe is one of the most talented and respected composer/authors in the sacred market today. He has great respect for the history and future of Shawnee Press, and writes in that distinctive style that choir directors know and love."

She continues, "Shawnee publications are a perfect fit within the Hal Leonard catalog, and we couldn't ask for a more dynamic addition to our roster than Joe. We welcome him into the Hal Leonard family with open arms."
