Reviews

  • “Completely thorough, but not overwhelming, 100 Country Lessons nicely works its way through a wide range of topics, with foundational concepts building on each other. This would be a good book for an older teen or adult to play through on their own. The lessons are clear and straightforward and the included CD serves as a helpful tool to guide the learner. Each lesson is accompanied by a short paragraph providing useful background information pertaining to the topic. Fun contemporary references to artists like Mumford and Sons and Hunter Hayes will motivate younger students to apply the techniques and patterns to their playing. I was excited by the teaching ideas percolating in my mind after working through the exercises. There are many creative ways the lessons can be used to make practical use of theory concepts. While country in nature, the basic techniques presented could be applied in numerous different formats. Students dappling in lead sheets would greatly benefit from the variety of accompaniment patterns provided and many of the lessons could serve as a jumping off point for compostion ideas and help ignite student's creativity. 'Tips for Learning a Tune' are the last three lessons. This is the most useful section, showing students how to put the concepts covered into practical application. These tips form an important bridge linking the abstract patterns presented to a complete song.” –Reviewed by Amy Perdew, American Music Teacher magazine
