“la li ley” is a lively and joyful piece for 4-part treble choir. It is a nod to two Malay folksongs in different ways: the text /vocables is inspired by a portion of “Canggung” (la la li la ley), and the main theme is inspired by the opening motif of “Mak Inang.” This work features exciting vocal play merged with folkloric elements - quartal harmonies, dance-like rhythms, and shifting tonality - that are spun through a musically-contemporary lens.
