Brandon Williams' “Voices of the Earth” was commissioned by the Singing City Choir of Philadelphia in 2024 for their concert titled “Earth, Wind, and Fire.” The composer found inspiration in Lampman's text, which offers vivid imagery and opportunities for diverse musical colors. The flavor of the Lydian mode and the mediant relationship between D-flat major and E major are used to depict the otherworldliness of the “music of the spheres” and the “sounds deeper than human joy or human tears.”
