The unusual cast with flute (also piccolo and alto flute), cello and percussion (2 players with xylophone, metallophones, crotales, glockenspiel, woodblocks, drums and temple block) corresponds to the preference of Urusla Mamlok for harsh sounds and clearly audible lines and structures. The designations “Toccata”, “Refrains”, “Variations” and “Epilogue” reveal that their compositional thinking is determined not by pictorial but rather by purely musical suggestions. All four movements together are no more than 10 minutes long - as early as 1969, when the Divertimento was written, the composer strove for the utmost precision, scarcity and condensation, which was to form the basis of her whole further work. The Divertimento was first performed in 1975 by the Parnassus Ensemble at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
