This set of orchestral pieces derives from Yu's piano album of variations on “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” entitled The Young Person's Guide to Composition. Book 1 provides very short variations and band directors can reference the piano version for an explanation of the composition techniques used, and are welcome to add their own narration during performance if required. Most of the pieces, especially those from Book 1, are suitable for school orchestras as they require only moderate playing technique. The division of the variations into Books 1, 2, 3, and 4 is not according to chronological or stylistic considerations, but purely designed to create four sections of roughly equal length for ease of finding the pieces and for performance. You can play a whole section or select individual pieces as required. Pieces marked attacca are intended to follow on immediately from the preceding piece. Most of these variations are based on the works of famous composers, and their interest and humor lies the way in which they deviate from the original work. For example, “Rondo alla Twinka” is based on Mozart's “Rondo alla Turca.” If your listeners are unfamiliar with the classical repertoire, it will help them if you play the original work before the variation. Assuming that most poeple will buy the score not for performance but for study purposes, the composer has notated the whole score at sounding pitch rather than as a traditional orchestral score with transposition, so that it is easier to read.
