Audrey Snyder Brown Passes Away

Longtime Hal Leonard composer and arranger Audrey Snyder Brown peacefully passed away on the morning of January 17th at the age of 72. She spent her last days surrounded by loving family and friends after a life filled with light, music and joy.

Audrey Genelle Snyder was born in Portland, OR, where she spent her youth before moving to Eugene to attend college in 1971. Eugene would become her lifelong home. After graduating from the University of Oregon with a degree in music education, she earned her master's degree while studying abroad in England, which was a transformative experience that shaped her life and career. In her early years, she worked as a public school music teacher and choir director while composing music in her spare time. After her first published works became instant successes, she began composing and arranging choral music full time as a contracted professional. Over the years, she gained international recognition as a music educator and composer, leaving a lasting impact through her original educational texts, choral compositions, and arrangements. Her music continues to be performed regularly in classrooms and concert halls worldwide, ranging from cathedrals in Europe to Carnegie Hall.

Incredible as her professional achievements were, Audrey remained exceptionally humble and always took the most pride in her family and friends. A loving and attentive matriarch, she was a gift to her family, inspiring them ceaselessly with her kindness, selflessness, and generosity of spirit. Throughout her life, she was equally close with her extended family, never missing a reunion, and spent later years regularly traveling the globe and finding mischief with her cousins. Audrey was an avid reader and gardener, as well as a lifelong Duck fan and anglophile. She left the world a much richer place and will be missed by all who knew her- a testament to her character and integrity. Hers was a life well lived.

She is survived by her two children, James Brown (Dr. Kate Brown) and Dr. Linden Brown (Dr. Andrew Portuguese), four grandchildren, and her brother, Lauren Snyder (Lois Snyder). Despite their profound and overwhelming grief, those who knew her will carry forward a deep sense of gratitude for her life, kinship, and friendship. She will be forever missed.

A memorial service will be held in Audrey’s honor in Eugene, OR at The Shedd Institute for the Arts on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025 at 2PM. Remembrances and correspondence may be sent to: AudreySnyderMemorial@gmail.com.
