MILWAUKEE, WI — Learning guitar doesn't have to stop after the first few chords. Beginning Guitar & Beyond: From First Lessons to Practical Guitar Skills from Hal Leonard gives aspiring guitarists everything they need to build a lasting foundation—and continue growing—all in one comprehensive package.
Designed for players picking up the instrument for the very first time, this all-in-one method begins with the essentials, including proper posture, tuning, reading tablature, open chords, and basic chord progressions. As confidence grows, the lessons naturally progress to more advanced techniques such as barre chords, seventh- and ninth-chord voicings, chord embellishments, triad inversions, slash chords, and rhythm styles inspired by rock, funk, and reggae. Rather than ending where many beginner methods do, Beginning Guitar & Beyond provides a clear path from first lesson to practical, real-world playing.
Bringing every concept to life are 18 expertly taught online video lessons totaling nearly three hours of instruction. Included with the purchase of the book, the streaming and downloadable videos walk students through each technique step by step with clear demonstrations, synchronized on-screen tablature, chord grids, and fretboard diagrams that reinforce the material presented in the 120-page companion book. It's like having a personal guitar instructor available anytime.
Whether your instrument of choice is an acoustic or electric guitar, the techniques and musical concepts presented throughout the book apply equally well to both, making Beginning Guitar & Beyond a flexible resource for virtually any beginning guitarist. From strumming your first chords to confidently navigating expanded chord voicings and contemporary rhythm styles, this method equips players with practical skills they can use in countless musical settings.
The purchase price includes access to all accompanying online videos, available for both streaming and download, allowing students to learn whenever and wherever inspiration strikes.
Beginning Guitar & Beyond: From First Lessons to Practical Guitar Skills is available from music retailers, bookstores, and online booksellers worldwide.

Chances are that if you’re a musician, you know the Hal Leonard logo. So if you've stopped by our website lately, you might have noticed that something looks a tad different.
In 2023, when Hal Leonard joined Muse Group, it united the world's largest sheet music catalog with the music tech pioneers behind Ultimate Guitar, Audacity, and MuseScore. And this merger came just before another pivotal moment for Muse Group. Shortly after, we underwent a rebrand led by COLLINS, the award-winning design agency behind Spotify and Dropbox. At its heart was the ambitious goal of creating a single visual identity that emotionally connected with the millions who play and make music with Muse products every day.
On paper, it made sense to include Hal Leonard in the rebrand as well. In reality, it wasn't quite as straightforward. This is a name that has spent over seven decades getting the songs musicians want to play into their hands across 65+ countries. After all, that kind of heritage and trust cannot be redesigned from scratch.
“It was very important to us that the musicians, teachers, and students who made Hal Leonard what it is still be able to recognize the logo they have come to know and love,” says Yaroslav Sizov, Head of Design at Muse Group. “Bringing two companies together, each with their own deep roots, takes shape gradually. It’s precisely those steps that shape who we become.”
Which is why the Hal Leonard swoosh that has graced songbooks and sheet music for generations remains untouched. What’s changed is the visual language around it. The typography was redesigned to be flexible for wherever the logo shows up next. The color story shifted too. Its legacy golden tone now sits alongside Muse’s natural blues, greens, and burgundy, a palette chosen to preserve a premium feel both Hal Leonard and Muse are known for.
As for when you'll see more of the refresh? Keep an eye out. It will continue to roll out across all Hal Leonard digital and print in the near future.
The change also reflects how the iconic sheet music publisher is integrating even more deeply into the Muse Group ecosystem. Its scores are already starting to appear in interactive formats on platforms like MuseScore, meeting musicians wherever they happen to play without losing the quality the Hal Leonard name has always stood for.
So while plenty is in the works, the Hal Leonard promise hasn't budged. It's still the music publisher you know, now tuned for everything ahead.
