Essential Elements Band Method Now Includes Google Classroom Integration

MILWAUKEE—Hal Leonard has just announced that Essential Elements now includes Google Classroom integration within its online component, Essential Elements Interactive (EEi).

Teachers now will have the ability to connect their Google Classroom accounts via EEi providing Single-Sign On (SSO) so that students and teachers don't need a separate login for EEi. It also provides an easy setup for getting students onboarded to EEi and provides a direct connection between EEi assignments and the gradebook in Google Classroom. Google Classroom integration is free and easy to manage within EEi.

Google Classroom is an all-in-one place for teaching and learning. The easy-to-use and secure tool helps educators manage, measure, and enrich learning experiences.

EEi is the online component of Hal Leonard's Essential Elements Band and Strings methods and is available at no additional cost to anyone using an Essential Elements book. Hal Leonard Introduces ChoralMix: Multi-Track, Mixable Audio with Digital Score that Directors Can Share with Their Choirs

08.10.23--Imagine a world where choir members can hear their isolated part, customize the mix of voices, and then practice along with professionally recorded vocal tracks to learn their part with a synchronized digital score.

Hal Leonard is pleased to introduce ChoralMix™, a multi-media tool that will do just that! Using this new technology, directors will now be able to separate choral recordings into the various voice parts AND share those recordings with their entire choir!

Furthermore, all vocal tracks (and accompaniment audio) are seamlessly stitched together to automatically follow Hal Leonard engraved choral scores. ChoralMix aims to create effortless advancements in class time management, sectional rehearsals, at-home study, and overall director convenience!

ChoralMix provides directors with access to real-time, interactive part-predominant digital audio recordings that they can share with their choir members via an online, streaming library. The choral score is clearly displayed one system at a time and is fully automated to follow the printed notation. The browser-based application requires internet access and can be accessed from any type of device: computers, smartphones, or tablets.

Directors simply must purchase the ChoralMix item for a song and share the unique access code with their choir members who can then log into the Hal Leonard MyLibrary portal and practice their parts. Teachers can decide if they want their students to share a single username for easy access, or if they prefer to set up unique usernames so that the director can track the number of times an individual has accessed ChoralMix.

This new tool will revolutionize preparing for a performance by giving the singers a valuable way to hear exactly how they should sound. It will also help teachers be able to monitor the practice routine of their students.

Edna Mae Burnam | Hal Leonard Edna Mae Burnam Edna Mae Burnam (1907-2007) is one of the most respected names in piano pedagogy. She began her study of the instrument at age seven, with lessons from her mother, and went on to major in piano at the University of Washington and Chico State Teacher's College in Los Angeles. In 1935, she sold "The Clock That Stopped"--one of her original compositions still in print today--to a publisher for $20. In 1937 Burnam began her long and fruitful association with Florence, Kentucky-based Willis Music, who signed her to her first royalty contract. In 1950, Burnam sent manuscripts to Willis for an innovative piano series comprised of short warm-up exercises; her hand-drawn, for-position-only stick figures indicated where "real" illustrations should be dropped in. That manuscript became the Dozen a Day series, which has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide; the stick-figure drawings are now icons. Burnam followed up on the success of A Dozen a Day with her Step by Step Piano Course. This method teaches students the rudiments of music in a logical order, for gradual and steady progress. She also composed hundreds of individual songs and pieces, many based on whimsical subjects or her international travels. These simple, yet effective learning tools for children studying piano have retained all their charm and unique qualities, and remain in print today in the Willis catalog. Tom Fettke | Hal Leonard Tom Fettke Tom Fettke is a composer, arranger and producer of music and recordings for the church and school. His published works and recordings number in the hundreds. His classic choral work THE MAJESTY AND GLORY OF YOUR NAME is sung by thousands of church and school choirs around the world. For over 50 years, the development of relevant, practical and dynamic choral music has been his passion and his profession. Tom holds degrees from Oakland City College and California State University at Hayward. He holds a California Lifetime Music Credential in Secondary Music. For a number of years he taught vocal music in California’s public school systems. He was a church choir director and minister of music in churches large and small for over 30 years. He was also Director of Choral Activities and Supervisor of Music for the Redwood Christian School System in Castro Valley, California. Tom was the creator and Senior Editor of THE HYMNAL for Worship and Celebration. Since its release in 1986, over three million copies have been placed in the pews of today’s church. He was also the Senior Editor of THE CELEBRATION HYMNAL, which has been heralded as one of the most innovative “tools” for ministry in the history of the church. He would be the leader of the group if hyenas weren't so lazy. Look for an outgoing and confident actor who can portray nastiness and gruffness. As Banzai is always featured with Shenzi and Ed, consider auditioning the hyenas in trios. Male, Any Age ED The third member of Scar's trio of lackeys. He has a loud, cackling laugh that is his only form of communication. Ed should be played by an actor who can laugh unabashedly and communicate through physicality and facial expressions rather than words. This role can be played by a boy or girl. Male or Female, Any Age ENSEMBLE The ensemble plays various inhabitants of the Pridelands, such as giraffes, elephants, antelopes, wildebeest, and other creatures you choose to include. This group can have as few or as many performers as your production permits. Be sure to cast many strong singers. There are also several moments to showcase individual dancers in "The Lioness Hunt" and "I Just Can't Wait to Be King." HYENAS Scar's army, helping carry out his evil plot to take over the Pridelands. Hyenas are mangy, mindless creatures who sing in "Be Prepared." Cast actors who are able to sing the background parts of that song while playing the loud and raucous characters. Your hyenas can double as animals of the Pridelands or lionesses. Male or Female, Any Age LIONESSES The fierce hunters of the Pridelands and featured in "The Lioness Hunt," "The Mourning," and "Shadowland." These actors should be strong singers, as the material can be challenging. Depending on the complexity of your choreography, particuarly for "The Lioness Hunt," strong dancers may be desirable as well. Female, Any Age MUFASA The strong, honorable, and wise lion who leads the Pridelands. Mufasa should command respect onstage and also show tenderness with his son, Simba. Cast a mature actor who can convincingly portray the king. Male, Any Age Range: B3 - C5 NALA Grows from a cub to a lioness before she confronts Scar, so cast a more mature actress to play the character beginning in Scene 10, As with older Simba and Young Simba, ensure that this switch in actors performing a single role is clear. Direct the actors to share a mask or costume piece that distinctly represents Nala, as well as a movement vocabulary. Female, Any Age Range: G3 - E5 PUMBAA A kindhearted, sensitive warthog who enjoys his simple life of grubs and relaxation. Cast a boy or girl who can portray this loveable and loyal friend to Timon and Simba with deadpan humor. Male or Female, Any Age Range: D4 - G5 RAFIKI A wise mandrill who acts as healer of the Pridelands and guides Simba on his journey home. She is an omniscient character, evincing an air of mystery. Rafiki has significant solos in "Circle of Life" and "He Lives in You," and leads the African chants throughout the show, so cast a confident performer with a strong singing voice. Female, Any Age Range: A3 - C5 SARABI A featured lioness, Mufasa's mate, and Simba's mother. Sarabi has a few key speaking lines for an actor who can deliver the care and command of a queen. Female, Any Age SARAFINA A featured lioness and Nala's mother. She has one short, spoken line, so consider giving this part to an actor who is putting in a lot of effort and hard work in rehearsal as a lioness. Female, Any Age SCAR The antagonist of the show, overcome with jealousy of his brother, Mufasa, and nephew, Simba. Coldhearted and wickedly intelligent, he will stop at nothing to become king of the Pridelands. Cast a mature performer who can bring out this villain's dark side while handling Scar's sarcastic sense of humor. As his solos can be spoken, opt for an actor over a singer. Male, Any Age Range: A3 - A4 SHENZI One of Scar's hyenas who plot to take over the Pridelands. She is the sassy one of the trio and is always looking out for herself. With Banzai and Ed, she should be able to laugh loudly and long, as well as be menacing to Young Simba and Young Nala. Female, Any Age SIMBA Grows from a cub to lion in "Hakuna Matata." Older Simba has more complex moments as he reunites with Nala, mourns his father, and returns to confront Scar, so cast a more mature actor. Be sure that the change in actors is clear: Try having Young Simba hand-off a costume piece, such as a medallion, to older Simba. Also be sure that Simba and Young Simba share a movement vocabulary. Male, Any Age Range: B3 - E5 TIMON An outcast meerkat who lives in the jungle with Pumbaa. He is afraid of his own shadow, but pretends to be the confident, relaxed leader of the duo. Timon is one of the funniest characters in the show and should be played by a charismatic actor who understands comic timing. This part can be played by a boy or a girl. Male or Female, Any Age Range: B3 - B4 YOUNG NALA A courageous lion and Young Simba's best friend. She is not afraid to speak her mind. While Young Nala does sing a little, look for a strong female performer who can portray this confident cub. Female, Any Age Range: A3 - C5 YOUNG SIMBA The protagonist of the story, is an adventurous and endearing cub who can't wait to be king of the Pridelands. Simba is playful, energetic, and naive, but after his father Mufasa's death, Simba struggles with shame and his destiny. Cast a strong singer and dynamic performer in this role. Male, Any Age Range: B3 - E5 ZAZU The anxious yet loyal assistant to Mufasa who is always busy trying to do his duty. Cast an extremely likeable actor who has a solid voice and acting chops. This actor should be able to remain focused over a long period of time as the character almost never leaves the stage. The Toolbooth The Tollbooth is the perfect role for an excellent singer who has solid musical skills. The role can be performed equally successfully by a male or female performer. Select a performer who has a powerful and confident voice. The role is usually performed offstage and unseen by the audience, but it does have two large feature moments in the show. This is a great place to feature a student who is studying opera. Demons Demons: (The Terrible Trivium, The Senses Taker, The Demon of Insincerity) are dark and scary entities that persuade Milo into not doing anything. They are sinister and love to be in control. They should all be good physical actors with strong acting skills and terrifying, evil laughs! Whether Man Whether Man is an eccentric individual not to be confused with a "weather man"! This is a great part for an actor with good physical comedy chops. Narrators Narrators are non-singing parts that require focus and good public speaking skills. They are a great way to feature ensemble members! These boys and girls are neighborhood kids that want to play with Milo. They are all non-singing roles. Lethargarians Lethargarians are slow motion, unmotivated, incredibly lackadaisical beings. That said, make sure you use ensemble members with lots of energy or risk your audience falling asleep with them! Tock Tock is an extremely energetic, lovable dog with an alarm clock in his or her belly. Cast a very physical actor comfortable crawling and sliding across the floor on his or her knees. The actor should also have a solid voice and a strong ability to focus onstage. Azaz Azaz is the king of words! While he deeply misses the Princesses, he doesn't want to work with his brother, the Mathemagician, to save them. Cast an actor with a classic "king" presence and strong acting chops. Mathemagician Mathemagician is the king of numbers. Much like Azaz, he secretly misses the Princesses but refuses to save them with his brother. This is a great part for an energetic actor with a good sense of rhythm and comedic timing. Rhyme and Reason Rhyme and Reason are the Princesses banished to the Castle in the Air. They are great classic ingenue roles and require actresses with strong voices. Page, Advisors and Lackeys Page, Advisors and Lackeys are all subjects of the royal kingdom of Dictionopolis, led by King Azaz. These roles are a great opportunity to feature your ensemble members who have strong physical comedy skills. They are all non-singing roles. Miners Miners are the subjects of Digitopolis. These are great physical comedy roles! Cast ensemble members who aren't afraid to be ridiculously silly onstage. Vendors Vendors are marketplace sellers of all types of words in Dictionopolis. These are great roles to feature your ensemble members with solo singing, and they require excellent character work. These are non-speaking roles.
