Crawford R. Thoburn | Hal Leonard Crawford R. Thoburn More than one hundred of Crawford R. Thoburn's choral compositions, arrangements, and editions have been published. Choirs across the U.S. and throughout the world sing his music, with performances noted in Nova Scotia, British Columbia, England, Germany, Austria, France, South Africa, Singapore, India, and Taiwan. Professional, church, and college groups record his works, which have been broadcast on National Public Radio and Public Radio International. At Wells College in Aurora NY, Crawford R. Thoburn is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. His student choral groups have won international awards in juried competition, performed by invitation at ACDA conventions and MENC meetings, toured in the U.S. and Europe, performed with many other college groups, and sung with professional orchestras. He has conducted numerous inter-collegiate choral collaborations, and enjoys a national reputation for expertise in women's choral literature and performance. Professor Thoburn has a B.A. from Allegheny College, where he studied theory, arranging, and conducting with Morten J. Luvaas. In 1999, the Allegheny Alumni Association selected him to receive its prestigious Gold Citation, ""in recognition and appreciation of the honor reflected upon the college by virtue of his professional achievements."" At Boston University, Professor Thoburn received a M.M. and worked as an assistant to his instructor in voice and conducting, Allen C. Lannom. He later studied choral and orchestral conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller, Margaret Hillis, and Robert Shaw. While on a year-long sabbatical leave, he was a member of and soloist with the St. Martin Singers of London, England, under the direction of W. D. Kennedy-Bell. Crawford served on the first National Committee on Editorial Standards of the American Choral Directors Association. His scholarly articles have appeared in the American Choral Review, Wells College Express and the Choral Journal, where he headed the Choral Review Department for five years. At Wells, Professor Thoburn chaired the Music Department, the Division of the Arts, the Centennial Committee, the New Arts Facilities Committee, the Summer College Program, and the Faculty Advisory Committee, and he was named the first Campbell Professor of the Arts. Off campus, Crawford has served many years as a choral director for Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Episcopalian congregations. Licensing FAQs | Hal Leonard Licensing FAQs Distance learning and virtual adjudication usages WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERMISSION TO MAKE PHOTOCOPIES FOR CONTEST USE AND PERMISSION TO MAKE PERMANENT PHOTOCOPIES? We understand that a certain number of copies of a score or part may be needed for judges at a festival or contest in which you or your organization is participating. If a work is not available for purchase and you are in need of copies for the judges' reference only, then you should submit your request for permission to make photocopies for contest use. The number of copies you would need in such a case is generally quite small (usually six or less) and all copies are to be destroyed after contest use. If you are seeking permission to make legal photocopies for your organization's music library or if you are seeking permission to make a significant number of photocopies (9 or more) you should submit your request for permission to make permanent photocopies. WILL THERE BE A FEE? HOW MUCH WILL IT BE? There will likely be a fee associated with processing your permission request. We are not able to give estimates or ballpark figures on fees since there are a number of different variables we take into consideration when setting our fees. Jay Bocook | Hal Leonard Jay Bocook Jay Bocook is internationally recognized as a composer, arranger, conductor, and educator. His works have been performed at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. In 2003, Bocook was a contributing arranger to the musical CyberJam, which opened to rave reviews at London's Queen's Theatre. Currently he is working as the arranger for Blast! The Music of Disney, which will open in Tokyo, Japan in the summer of 2017. In 2003, the U.S. Marine Band premiered Jay's transcriptions of the film music of John Williams at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. An encore performance with Williams and "The President's Own" took place in 2008. Jay's transcription of Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Suite from "On the Waterfront" can be heard on the 2015 Marine Band CD Elements. In 1982, Bocook was appointed director of bands at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. In 1989, he left to pursue other opportunities as an arranger for Jenson Publications, but returned to Furman in 2000 as Director of Athletic Bands. He remains a principal composer and arranger for Hal Leonard, where he has published over 600 arrangements and original compositions. Bocook served as arranger for the ten-time world champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from 1993-2016, and currently serves in the same capacity for the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps of Denver, CO. Robert Baksa | Hal Leonard Robert Baksa Robert Baksa was born in New York City in 1938 of Hungarian Parentage and is one of America's most prolific composers. He grew up in Tucson, Arizona and eventually earned a BA in Composition at the University of Arizona. He returned to live in New York City in the early 60s. He has written more than 500 pieces of music since his first efforts as a teenager. Since his earliest New York reviews critics have noted his melodic gifts, the structural clarity and harmonious nature of his music. His first pieces, short piano pieces written in the early 1950s which he later arranged for wind trio, are in fact still being performed around the world. His numerous choral pieces have been performed in many countries and his art songs have been featured in two recent studies on the subject of American Art Song. Performers who have been associated with his music include Harpsichordist Elaine Comparone who has commissioned a number of works, Saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera, Sharon Robinson, The Boehm Wind Quintet, the Virtuosi Wind Quintet, the Bronx Arts Ensemble, the Sylvan Winds and the St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble which began its existence with a full evening of Baksa's music. The composer makes his home in Columbia County in the Mid Hudson Valley where he serves as New Music Coordinator and Composer in Residence for the Pleshakov Music Center. It is primarily based on Damon Runyon's short story "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown," which describes the unlikely romance between a pure at heart urban missionary and a slick Broadway gambler. The show's second romantic storyline involves Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide, who have been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan organizes "the oldest established, permanent floating craps game in New York," and Adelaide is the main attraction at the Hot Box nightclub. Guys and Dolls opened on Broadway on November 24, 1950. Producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin assembled an exceptional team to bring Runyon's hard-shelled, but basically softhearted characters to the stage. The team, which included composer/lyricist Frank Loesser, co-book writer Abe Burrows, director George S. Kaufman, and choreographer Michael Kidd, created an instant hit, praised by reviewers as one of the most well constructed book musicals in Broadway history. Sky Masterson Sky Masterson is the quintessential, smooth as velvet Broadway gambler. He needn't be a great singer, but MUST be able to own the stage in "Luck Be a Lady." Sarah Brown Sarah Brown is the girl next door with a more adventurous side that's waiting to get out. She must be an excellent singer and a good actor. Arvide Abernathy Arvide Abernathy is Sarah's grandfather. May also be cast as a girl, changing to Sarah's grandmother. Benny Southstreet Benny Southstreet is a gambler. Rusty Charlie Rusty Charlie is a gambler. Harry the Horse Harry the Horse is a gambler. Lt. Brannigan Lt. Brannigan is a New York City cop. General Cartwright General Cartwright is head of the Save-a-Soul mission. Big Jule Big Jule is a very tough, gun-toting gangster from Chicago. Mimi Mimi is a doll. Angie the Ox Angie the Ox is a gambler. Guys Guys - The rest of your male ensemble (except for the mission band) can be cast as "guys." They are the crapshooters, gamblers, workers, New York City folks of all types. Dolls Dolls - The Dolls are your Hot Box girls and other ensemble females. You will want to designate your Hot Box girls as your preferred singers and dancers. Frequently, you will have many more girls than boys audition, so you may want to cast some of your girls as "guys." Mission Band Mission Band includes Agatha and Calvin. You can fill out the ensemble of your production by adding as many members of the Mission Band as your stage can accommodate.

Honoring Rick Walters

Hal Leonard has announced the loss of their esteemed friend and colleague, Rick (Richard) Walters.

Walters, a key figure at Hal Leonard for 39 years, began his journey as a keyboard editor and ascended to the role of VP of Classical & Vocal Publications. In 2011, he pioneered the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition, the industry's first all-YouTube contest for vocal students. This groundbreaking initiative earned widespread respect and propelled numerous students into successful singing careers. Rick's dedication was evident as he personally reviewed tens of thousands of videos until the competition concluded with his retirement in 2023. Even after retiring, he continued to make a difference in the music community, particularly with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, where he served on the board and mentored budding composition students.

His unwavering passion and commitment to preserving and presenting repertoire for students and their teachers have left an indelible mark. Rick’s many iconic projects include the Singer’s Musical Theatre Anthology series, the Hal Leonard Vocal Library series, Schirmer Performance Editions series, a new edition of 28 Italian Songs & Arias of the 17^th & 18^th Centuries, and collections of music by Benjamin Britten, Samuel Barber, Stephen Sondheim, and even Mel Brooks.

Dale Peterson | Hal Leonard Dale Peterson Dale Peterson is the Minister of Music and Composer in Residence at the Auburn First Baptist Church in Auburn, Alabama. He is a member of ASCAP, receiving the ASCAP award for over 20 years consecutively. He is active in the ACDA; has written reviews for Choral Journal; and is often a guest conductor at music weeks, camps, and choral workshops. He received a BA in Music Theory from the University of Kentucky and a MM in Music Theory from the College Conservatory of Music - University of Cincinnati as well as completed all coursework for the Ph.D. Publications by Dale Peterson

Mark Taylor | Hal Leonard Mark Taylor In 2001 Mark retired as chief arranger for The United States Army Band ("Pershing's Own"), where he was on staff for 24 years. During that time, he composed extensively for the U.S. Army Blues, writing all of the material for their album A New Beginning and much of the material for Scream Machine. His arrangements and compositions have been performed by the Army Blues throughout the world, including concerts at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. Prior to joining the Army, Mark was fortunate to write for Stan Kenton, who recorded many of his compositions and also gave him his start in music publishing. He has a large publishing portfolio and has influenced thousands of student musicians, many of whom were first exposed to big band jazz through his music. His latest project is the Taylor/Fidyk Big Band, which is co-led with Washington D.C. drummer Steve Fidyk. They released their CD A Perfect Match in 2002 to rave reviews. Their new CD Live at Blues Alley has just been released on the OA2 record label. Mark is a highly regarded clinician presenting many workshops on arranging for the jazz band, most recently appearing at the Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago. Mark holds a master's degree in music from the University of North Texas. Mark is currently a staff arranger for Hal Leonard Corporation and resides in Cape Coral, Florida. Mark also produced and arranged three top selling children's records, "Have Yourself A Looney Tunes Christmas," "Frosty The Snowman," and "Looney Tunes Kwazy Christmas" for RHINO Records. In 1997 the Gospel Music Association honored Mark with a nomination for a DOVE Award for musical of the year, "Majesty of Christmas." Mark's academic background includes Millikin University, University of North Texas and UCLA-Los Angeles.
