Winners Announced of 12th Annual Hal Leonard Vocal Competition

MILWAUKEE, 5/13/22—We are pleased to announce the results of the 2022 Hal Leonard Vocal Competition. Established in 2011, it was one of the first legitimate music competitions held entirely on YouTube. Eligible singers from the US and Canada were able to enter, with no entry fee.

There were over 1300 entries this year in two divisions: Classical Art Song and Musical Theatre. Four age categories comprise each: Children (ages 12 and under), Early Teens (ages 13-15), High School (ages 16-18), and College Undergraduates (ages 18-23). Hal Leonard awards over $10,000 in cash and gift certificates in its support of vocal music across North America, recognizing the accomplishments of singers and their voice teachers.

Art Song first place winners in 2022 included Heidi Hager (age 11) of Herndon, VA; Grace Chang (age 15) of Hackensack, NJ; Elena Oliveira (age 18) of Houston, TX; and Kaya Giroux (age 21) of Carnegie Mellon University.

Musical Theatre first place winners recognized Maya Joshi (age 12) of Cresskill, NJ; Kaiya Bagley (age 15) of Medford, OR; Amelia Gibbons (age 17) of De Pere, WI; and Abigail Storm (age 20) of Austin, TX.

Rick Walters, Vice President of Classical & Vocal Music, stated: “We are continually impressed and moved by the diverse tapestry of talent so evident in these entries. The urge to sing is a basic human trait to be celebrated. After hearing thousands of singers over the last 11 years, we still are excited at watching each audition.”
