Winners Announced of 7th Annual Hal Leonard Vocal Competition

Hal Leonard, the world leader in vocal music, has announced the winners of the seventh annual Hal Leonard Vocal Competition for young classical and theatre singers, comprised entirely of YouTube video entries. There were more than 1000 entries in the 2017 competition in two divisions: Art Song and Musical Theatre, with four age categories for each, children through college undergraduates. Hal Leonard gave away $10,000 in cash prizes and gift certificates to encourage singers to continue their vocal studies, and to recognize the good work of voice teachers. Unlike almost every other music competition, there is no entry fee or travel cost to an audition site for the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition. Singers from all over the U.S. and Canada can compete with others in their age group and view the videos online. First Place Winners for 2017 in Art Song: College/University undergraduates (ages 18-23): Anthony Leon from La Sierra University - High School Voices (ages 16-18): Alea Vernon from Cheshire, Connecticut - Early Teen Voices (ages 13-15): Madelin Morales of Fairfield, New Jersey - Children's Voices (ages 12 and under): Harriet Chilton of Santa Barbara, California. First Place Winners for 2017 in Musical Theatre: College/Young Adult Voices (ages 18-23): Trevor Vanderzee from DePaul University - High School Voices (ages 16-18): Ashlyn Combs from Lexington, South Carolina - Early Teen Voices (ages 13-15): Alek Rahman from Scottsdale, Arizona - Children's Voices (ages 12 and under): Aliyah Douglas from Oro Valley, Arizona. Rick Walters, Vice-President of Classical & Vocal Publications at Hal Leonard, states, "We're always encouraged about the future of voice performance while watching all these entries. The students and their teachers should be very proud of their efforts. Judging was particularly difficult this year!" To see the winning videos from all the contest categories, click here.
