Reviews

  • “Washington Women: A Choral Cycle, scored for piano, cello, and mixed ensemble, is a collection of choral works by Judith Clurman and David Chase, performed by Essential Voices USA. It consists of excerpts of speeches and writings from sixteen important voices: first ladies, secretaries of state, senators, and supreme court justices. Some names are more recognizable than others––Condoleezza Rice, Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford––while others might not be: Margaret Chase Smith (the first woman to be elected to both the House of Representatives and Senate) or Shirley Chisholm (the first African American woman in Congress). Clurman and Chase wrote the pieces with both professional and amateur choruses in mind; the works are also accessible for high school choirs. Each piece has a poignant text and an individual character, heightened by the use of cello. The diction, so important for a work of this kind, is excellent and keeps the listener engaged. The cello is exquisite as it weaves in and out of the various textures. This recording is compelling and well worth listening to multiple times. Washington Women performed by Essential Voices USA premiered as an NPR Tiny Desk Concert on July 1, 2022, as a fitting tribute to these women...Take advantage of this tribute to important female leaders.” –Kiser/Choral Journal 2023
