Paris Rutherford | Hal Leonard Paris Rutherford Paris Rutherford is considered one of the top vocal jazz arrangers in the country today. His arrangements focus carefully on singability in the lyric and voice leading, and are crafted to bring an unusual touch to the music. Mr. Rutherford is Professor in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas, where he directs the award-winning UNT Jazz Singers and teaches courses in jazz arranging, song writing, and broadcast music. He also heads the degree program in vocal jazz. Under Rutherford's direction, the Jazz Singers have performed for the International Association for Jazz Education, Music Educators National Conference, American Choral Directors Association, and many jazz festivals around the country, as well as for the summer vocal jazz workshop, held annually on the UNT campus. Their recordings are heard on six CDs. Paris Rutherford brings a wealth of experience to his vocal jazz writing. A former member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Summer Musicals (trombone), and long experience as performer, composer and producer in the recording studios of Dallas, Los Angeles, London, England, and Cologne, Germany, his arrangements reflect the diversity of those varied activities. He is in demand as a clinician in vocal jazz, both as a director and as a writer. With degrees of Bachelor and Master of Music from Southern Methodist University, he enjoys living in Denton, Texas with his wife Lynne. Publications by Paris Rutherford
Rodney Miller | Hal Leonard Rodney Miller After graduating from Lebanon Valley College in 1977, Rodney Miller spent 17 years teaching in Lebanon School District, where he taught strings in grades 3 through 12. Miller also directed the middle school jazz band. For the last seven years before his death in 2005, he was the elementary instrumental music instructor. Miller was a recipient of the Lebanon Valley College’s Creative Achievement Award in 2003. Two years later, he was posthumously awarded the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Distinguished Service Award, and at the same time the PMEA changed the name of this award to the Rodney S. Miller Distinguished Service Award. For the Lebanon School District, Miller ran the instrumental summer lessons program and initiated a scholarship program for students who could not afford to pay for summer lessons. He was also actively involved with the Cedar Foundation, an organization that helped to get instruments to students who could not afford them in the Lebanon School District. Miller was a six-time ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Standard Award winner. He had over 40 instrumental and choral works published by music publishing houses, including Shawnee Press, Alfred Music, Warner Bros., TRN Music, Educational Programs Publications, Brixton Publications and Kagarice Brass Editions. Miller did graduate work at VanderCook College in Chicago, The Hartt School of the University of Hartford, West Chester University, and the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. He arranged and performed with the Dave Stahl Sacred Orchestra. For over 20 years, Miller was co-musical director/arranger for the Timbers Dinner Theatre in Mount Gretna, where he lived. Valerie Mack | Hal Leonard Valerie Mack Valerie Lippoldt Mack, lead instructor of music at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas received a Bachelor of Arts from Bethany College, a Bachelor of Music Education and Master’s of Music Education from Wichita State University. Valerie has gained experience and recognition as a music educator and professional choreographer throughout the United States. Her choreography has been featured at Carnegie Hall, Disney World, national ACDA conventions and MENC workshops. A noted clinician, adjudicator and director, she has presented and adjudicated more than 500 workshops and festivals, including the Shawnee Press annual Music in the Mountains event. She and her husband Tom, direct the annual Butler Showchoir Showcase each summer in El Dorado, Kansas. At Butler Community College, Valerie directs the 100-voice Butler Concert Choir, the Butler Headliners Showchoir, the Smorgaschords Barbershop Quartet, and teaches tap dance and private voice. The barbershop quartet continuously places at the International Collegiate Barbershop Competition. Valerie was honored as the Butler Master Teacher, has delivered commencement addresses, and is in demand as a motivational speaker for numerous events. In her spare time, Valerie teaches at the Kansas Dance Academy, is a talent coach for the Miss America program, and is involved with family activities. Jay Bocook | Hal Leonard Jay Bocook Jay Bocook is internationally recognized as a composer, arranger, conductor, and educator. His works have been performed at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. In 2003, Bocook was a contributing arranger to the musical CyberJam, which opened to rave reviews at London's Queen's Theatre. Currently he is working as the arranger for Blast! The Music of Disney, which will open in Tokyo, Japan in the summer of 2017. In 2003, the U.S. Marine Band premiered Jay's transcriptions of the film music of John Williams at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. An encore performance with Williams and "The President's Own" took place in 2008. Jay's transcription of Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Suite from "On the Waterfront" can be heard on the 2015 Marine Band CD Elements. In 1982, Bocook was appointed director of bands at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. In 1989, he left to pursue other opportunities as an arranger for Jenson Publications, but returned to Furman in 2000 as Director of Athletic Bands. He remains a principal composer and arranger for Hal Leonard, where he has published over 600 arrangements and original compositions. Bocook served as arranger for the ten-time world champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from 1993-2016, and currently serves in the same capacity for the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps of Denver, CO. In 2009, he was inducted into the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame, and in 2011 he was elected into the American Bandmasters Association. Publications by Jay Bocook
Rene Clausen | Hal Leonard Rene Clausen René Clausen has served as conductor of The Concordia Choir of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., since 1986. Additionally, he is the artistic director of the award-winning Concordia Christmas Concerts, which are frequently featured by PBS stations throughout the nation. Clausen is a well-known composer whose choral compositions are currently published by Roger Dean, Augsburg Fortress, Santa Barbara, Walton, Hal Leonard, Mark Foster and Shawnee Press. His compositional style is varied and eclectic, ranging from works appropriate for high school and church choirs to more technically demanding compositions for college and professional choirs. Interested in composing for various media, Clausen’s compositional interests include works for the stage, solo voice, film and video composition, choral/orchestral compositions and arrangements, as well as works for orchestra and wind ensemble. He regularly composes on a commission basis, and is a frequent guest conductor and composer-in-residence on an international basis. In addition to choral conducting, Clausen is increasingly well known as a guest conductor of the major literature for choir and orchestra. At Carnegie Hall he has guest conducted the Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, Mozart Requiem and Mass in C Minor, together with the New York premiere of three of his own works, Gloria (in three movements), Whispers of Heavenly Death, with text by Walt Whitman, and Communion, with text by George Macdonald. Other major choral/orchestral works he has conducted include the Poulenc Gloria, Vaughan Williams Hodie, Beethoven Mass in C Major and Choral Fantasy, and Fauré Requiem. Other recent works include The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere and Celebration Canticles. In the summer of 1998, Clausen established the René Clausen Choral School held on the campus of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota. Much more than a reading workshop, the choral school is an intensive, five-day program for choral conductors focusing on conducting and rehearsal technique, performance practice issues, elements of choral ensemble, tonal development, as well as daily reading sessions of new music. Michele Fernández | Hal Leonard Michele Fernández Michele Fernández is an active guest clinician/conductor, composer, festival adjudicator, and performer. Her compositions have been premiered at Midwest, IAJE, and Regional Honor/All-State venues. Her original works for jazz ensemble are published through Hal Leonard, Excelcia Music, JW Pepper, Print Music Source and “Jazz Zone” series (text authored by J. Richard Dunscomb).  She is a sponsored Hal Leonard clinician, HAPCO Foundation staff clinician and in the past has also served as guest clinician/conductor/guest lecturer for various universities, including UNCo, UNT, UM Frost, UF and others. She frequently serves as a guest clinician/conductor for Regional and State-level Honor Jazz Ens /Symphonic Bands. She has appeared as clinic lecturer at JEN (2022), Midwest (’07 & ’16), FMEA, Clark College Annual Festival (WA), and a frequent in-residence conductor for FSU summer camps. She serves bands around the country through clinics virtually or in-person via Composer-in-Residence events. Michele recently retired from teaching after 30 years, where her Miami Senior High ensembles earned top honors and gained international acclaim. Her groups have been selected for appearances at the Midwest Clinic (Chicago ’93 & ’98), IAJE (Boston ’94 & NYC ’97), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland ’96), FMEA Conference (‘94 & ’97) and national publications. Michele has been the subject of a documentary on “CBS Sunday Morning”, cover story in Band Director’s Guide and a featured educator in Downbeat Magazine. Michele has also taught Excep. Student Ed, English and Chemistry. David Lantz III | Hal Leonard David Lantz III David Lantz III is originally from Mountain Lake, New Jersey. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. His major instrument was the trombone. He has taught music in all grade levels from K-college, including high school band, chorus, and music theory, junior high school general and choral, and elementary general and choral. Currently, he teaches at East Stroudsburg High School South, where he directs two concert choirs, jazz/show choir, and a select chorale. In addition to choral activities, Dave has developed three levels of music theory, which have contributed a great deal to the success of the choral program. Also, David is the choral director at Stroudsburg United Methodist Church and director of Pocono Summer Chorus, a community chorus in the Pocono Mountains. David is a freelance studio bass player and vocalist, having also played extensively in many resorts and clubs in the tri-state area, both with his own band and with other musicians. While not teaching or playing, he fills his spare time with music publishing activities, including editing, engraving, arranging and composing choral music and occasionally conducting choral reading sessions. He has nearly 300 choral octavos in print with Shawnee Press as well as many other publishers throughout the United States. David is a member of PMEA and ACDA. As a member of ASCAP, he has won many writers awards. David resides in Sciota, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Marti Lunn Lantz (also a published composer and lyricist) and six children. Sean O'Loughlin | Hal Leonard Sean O'Loughlin Sean O’Loughlin (b.1972) is the Principal Pops Conductor of Symphoria, from Syracuse (NY). He is a fresh voice and a rising name in the music world. His music is characterized by vibrant rhythms, passionate melodies, and colorful scoring. Commissions from the Boston Pops Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra highlight and showcase his diverse musical abilities. As a conductor, he has led performances with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Victoria Symphony and the Seattle Symphony amongst others. He has served as conductor for summer symphony tours with Josh Groban, Sarah McLachlan, Melissa Etheridge and the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration. Recent collaborations include such artists as Sarah McLachlan, Adele, Josh Groban, Bonnie Raitt, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Melissa Etheridge, Blue Man Group, Janelle Monáe, Audra McDonald, Hall and Oates, Gloria Estefan, the Indigo Girls, Diana Krall, Itzhak Perlman, Natalie Merchant, Chris Isaak,  Pink Martini, Brandi Carlile, The Decemberists, Martina McBride, Josh Ritter, The Go Go's, Gloria Gaynor and others. The Los Angeles Times calls Sean's orchestrations "...magnificent and colorful" while adding "...even more dimension..." to the compositions. Daily Variety heralds his writing as "most impressive..." with a "wide range of coloring in the orchestra..." that "...adds heft and rolling energy." Through his growing number of commissioned and published works, Sean is excited to continue contributing to the rich history of orchestral and wind band literature. He is a frequent guest conductor with professional orchestras and honor bands around the country. An annual ASCAP Special Awards winner, Sean was a composition fellow at the Henry Mancini Institute in Los Angeles, and holds composition degrees from New England Conservatory and Syracuse University. Z. Randall Stroope | Hal Leonard Z. Randall Stroope Z. Randall Stroope is an American composer and conductor.  He has conducted concerts in 25 countries, is the Artistic Director of two international summer festivals, and has directed music for Vatican masses on 10 different occasions. He has conducted in Hong Kong, Rome, Singapore, Barcelona, Dublin, and St. John (Canada).  In the United States, Randall has conducted nearly 40 performances at Carnegie Hall, and numerous appearances at Chicago Orchestra Hall, and other venues. He has conducted 47 all-state choirs. Ensembles under his direction have performed at two national ACDA conventions, four regional ACDAs, and numerous state conventions. He has six albums on Spotify and over 70 YouTube recordings.  A native of New Mexico, Randall attended the University of Colorado and Arizona State University, receiving a masters in vocal performance and doctorate in conducting, respectively. He taught high school for seven years in Denver, Colorado, and has been Professor of Music at three universities.  Randall has received numerous awards including the Douglas R. McEwen Award for National Choral Excellence (Arizona State University). In composition, Randall’s teachers were Normand Lockwood and Cecil Effinger, both students of Nadia Boulanger, the famous French teacher (and student of Gabriel Fauré.) He has 190 published works, and sold over four million copies.  Randall has written commissions for many entities, including West Point Military Academy, Raymond Brock commission (ACDA), Taiwan Chamber Choir, Carols for Choirs 5 (Oxford University Press), Music Teachers National Association, and numerous secondary schools, universities, state music education associations, and professional chorales.   Publications by Z. Rick Weymuth | Hal Leonard Rick Weymuth "Dr. Richard Weymuth is a native of Cole Camp, Missouri. He began his career in 1967 and has taught vocal music from the kindergarten to university level until his retirement. Weymuth moved to his last position at Northwest Missouri State University in 1980. As Director of Choirs and professor of music, he not only directed the Northwest Celebration, Tower Choir, and Madraliers, but also taught courses in secondary choral methods, choral conducting and applied voice. His administrative duties included: Director of the Northwest Summer Music Camps, Director of the 48-school Northwest Jazz and Show Choir Festival, Choral Director of University Musicals, and Producer of the Northwest Yuletide Feasts. Weymuth received his B.M.E. and M.A. degrees from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg and his Ph.D. from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. His dissertation title was ""The Development and Evaluation of a Cognitive Music Achievement Test to Evaluate Missouri High School Choral Music Students."" Dr. Weymuth is a past president of Missouri American Choral Directors Association, a past vice president of the Missouri Music Educators Association, and a past president of Missouri Student Music Educators Association. In 2002 he was inducted into the Missouri Music Hall of Fame as the 30th recipient. In 1992 he received the Luther T. Spayde Award from the Missouri American Choral Directors Association as the Outstanding Choral Director of the Year. He was named Outstanding Music Alumni of the Year in 1981 by Central Missouri State University and has received honors from the National Junior Chamber of Commerce as an Outstanding Young Man in America. Along with his teaching and directing achievements, Weymuth is known for his numerous junior and senior high school clinics. During the past years, he has conducted over 740 choral clinics and festivals. He has conducted major choral festivals and all-state choirs in 39 states. Dr. Weymuth is also known for his numerous national and regional workshops on Classroom Motivation, Student Leadership, Success in the Classroom, Choral Literature, and Show Choir Techniques. Samuel R. Hazo | Hal Leonard Samuel R. Hazo Samuel R. Hazo (b. 1966) resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his wife and children. In 2003, Mr. Hazo became the first composer in history to be awarded the winner of both composition contests sponsored by the National Band Association. He has composed for the professional, university and public school levels in addition to writing original scores for television, radio and the stage. His original symphonic compositions include performances with actors Brooke Shields, James Earl Jones, David Conrad and Richard Kiley. Most recently, Mr. Hazo was asked by the Newtown School District to compose the memorial for the children and women who were lost in the tragedy at their Sandy Hook Elementary School. The result was a major work for Choir, Orchestra and Wind Band combined titled "Glorificare." It was premiered in May of 2013 by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and VOCE Singers performing side-by-side with the Newtown High School musicians. Mr. Hazo also composed "Bridges," which he was requested to write by Virginia Tech University following their tragic shootings.  In 2012, two of Mr. Hazo's compositions were performed at the London Summer Olympic Games.   On the Internet, Mr. Hazo's music has compiled over three million hits on YouTube. His compositions have been performed and recorded world-wide, including performances by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra (national tour), the Birmingham Symphonic Winds (UK) and the Klavier Wind Project’s recordings with Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Additionally, numerous titles of Mr. Hazo's works are included in the series "Teaching Music Through Performance in Band."  He has served as composer-in-residence at Craig Kirchhoff’s University of Minnesota Conducting Symposium and has also lectured on music and music education at universities and high schools internationally. In 2004, Mr. Hazo's compositions were listed in a published national survey of the "Top Twenty Compositions of All Time" for wind band.  He is a member of ASCAP and recipient of multiple ASCAPlus Awards. Samuel R. Hazo has been a music teacher at every educational grade level from kindergarten through college, including tenure as a high school and university director. He has been invited to guest conduct over 60 university ensembles and half of All-State bands in America. Mr. Hazo was twice named “Teacher of Distinction” by the southwestern Pennsylvania Teachers’ Excellence Foundation. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Duquesne University where he served on the Board of Governors and was awarded as Duquesne’s Outstanding Graduate in Music Education. Chuck Marohnic | Hal Leonard Chuck Marohnic Chuck Marohnic has enjoyed a multi-faceted career. Starting four decades ago as a jazz pianist, today he is a respected musician, educator, author, composer and arranger. For 13 years, Chuck had the privilege of serving as Music Director in numerous churches including United Methodist, Roman Catholic and United Churches of Christ. He also has been a frequent guest performer and clinician at many Lutheran, Presbyterian and other churches, including serving for over five years as Director of Music for the well known Studio worship service at Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ. He currently serves as Associate Director of Music for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Community, Louisville, KY. Chuck has recorded 35 albums and CDs. Downbeat Magazine awarded his performances 4 stars. Early in his career, Chuck worked as a sideman with Ira Sullivan, Joe Henderson, Jamey Aebersold, Buddy Rich, Chet Baker and many others. He has served as a visiting clinician and performer at festivals in Germany, Brazil and France. For five years he acted as Coordinator of Jazz Studies and a guest artist at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Fairbanks, Alaska. In May of 1998, Having retired in 2003, Chuck was the Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University since 1981. His former students include John Medeski of Medeski, Martin and Wood; Scott Henderson of Tribal Tech; Phil Strange, formerly with Joe Henderson; German pianist Klaus Ignatzek; Tim Ray, pianist for Lyle Lovett; and Joey Sellers, now a prominent educator/arranger living in S. California. Chuck has written four jazz publications. In addition, Chuck has written jazz piano arrangements of familiar church hymns and worship and praise songs, taking them from inside church walls to the entire community. What started as a sabbatical leave project from his position as Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University, turned into a book entitled Sanctuary Jazz, (July 1998, Shawnee Press). Joseph Martin, acclaimed pianist and keyboard editor for Shawnee Press says, ""Chuck is one of the best writers in the country today."" Crawford R. Thoburn | Hal Leonard Crawford R. Thoburn More than one hundred of Crawford R. Thoburn's choral compositions, arrangements, and editions have been published. Choirs across the U.S. and throughout the world sing his music, with performances noted in Nova Scotia, British Columbia, England, Germany, Austria, France, South Africa, Singapore, India, and Taiwan. Professional, church, and college groups record his works, which have been broadcast on National Public Radio and Public Radio International. At Wells College in Aurora NY, Crawford R. Thoburn is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. His student choral groups have won international awards in juried competition, performed by invitation at ACDA conventions and MENC meetings, toured in the U.S. and Europe, performed with many other college groups, and sung with professional orchestras. He has conducted numerous inter-collegiate choral collaborations, and enjoys a national reputation for expertise in women's choral literature and performance. Professor Thoburn has a B.A. from Allegheny College, where he studied theory, arranging, and conducting with Morten J. Luvaas. In 1999, the Allegheny Alumni Association selected him to receive its prestigious Gold Citation, ""in recognition and appreciation of the honor reflected upon the college by virtue of his professional achievements."" At Boston University, Professor Thoburn received a M.M. and worked as an assistant to his instructor in voice and conducting, Allen C. Lannom. He later studied choral and orchestral conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller, Margaret Hillis, and Robert Shaw. While on a year-long sabbatical leave, he was a member of and soloist with the St. Martin Singers of London, England, under the direction of W. D. Kennedy-Bell. Crawford served on the first National Committee on Editorial Standards of the American Choral Directors Association. His scholarly articles have appeared in the American Choral Review, Wells College Express and the Choral Journal, where he headed the Choral Review Department for five years. At Wells, Professor Thoburn chaired the Music Department, the Division of the Arts, the Centennial Committee, the New Arts Facilities Committee, the Summer College Program, and the Faculty Advisory Committee, and he was named the first Campbell Professor of the Arts. Off campus, Crawford has served many years as a choral director for Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Episcopalian congregations. Michael Abene | Hal Leonard Michael Abene Michael Abene is a composer, arranger, keyboard player and record producer. Michael joined the Maynard Ferguson band while still a teenager and was responsible for writing some of the most-requested arrangements, such as "Green Dolphin Street," "Airegin," "Fox Hunt," "Chicago," "Whisper Not," "Knarf" and "Cherokee." Michael produced the Grammy-winning projects "Digital Duke" featuring the Duke Ellington Orchestra and "The GRP All-Star Big Band-All Blues." He produced the Grammy-nominated "GRP All-Star Big Band" and "The GRP All-Star Big Band Live" and received nominations in the arranging category for all three big band records. Other projects he has produced are "The GRP Christmas Collection Volumes 1, 2 and 3" (Volume 1 was awarded a gold record for sales of 500,000 units), "Happy Anniversary, Charlie Brown," two projects for Billy Taylor, "... It's a matter of pride" and "Homage," "Maiden Voyage" for Nnenna Freelon plus projects for Billy Cobham, Eddie Daniels and Dave Valentin. Some of the other artists Michael has composed and arranged for are Take 6, Joe Lovano, Bireli Lagrene, Montreal fusion bassist Alain Caron, Dick Oatts, Dave Grusin, for which he received a 1998 Grammy nomination for the arrangement of "America" from "Dave Grusin Presents West Side Story," Chick Corea, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Liza Minnelli, Charles Aznavour, Dave Taylor, Ronnie Cuber, Diva, the Metropole Jazz Orchestra in the Netherlands and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Michael has also appeared as featured pianist and arranger/composer with the UMO Jazz Orchestra in Helsinki, WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany, the Rotterdam Conservatory Big Band (The Netherlands), Jazz Big Band Graz (Austria), Kluvers Big Band (Denmark) and the BBC Big Band in England. Michael also has produced and arranged for many singers, from pop and crossover artists Patti Austin and B.B. King, to classic jazz artists Grady Tate, Joe Williams, Chris Connor, New York Voices and Diane Schuur. Two works of Michael's were premiered during the summer of 2000: a piece he arranged for The Metropole Jazz Orchestra for seven trombones where each trombonist contributed an original and Michael composed opening and connecting sections allowing the piece to be played as a suite. This composition was performed at the International Trombone Festival in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The second composition was an original work commissioned by The Mancini Institute, where Michael has appeared as composer-in-residence, for bass trombonist Dave Taylor entitled "Heritage: New/Old and Then Some" and performed by The Mancini Institute Orchestra and Big Band. This work has also been performed by The Manhattan School of Music Studio Jazz Orchestra and in 2004 by The Amsterdam Conservatory Orchestra and Big Band. Two new compositions by Michael premiered in 2003 were "Odyssey for Brass," commissioned and performed by The Metropole Jazz Orchestra in Tilburg, The Netherlands and "Fragmentations" performed by the Slovenian Symphony and Radio Big Band. In the fall of 2003 Michael was appointed Musical Director, Principal Composer/Arranger of the WDR Radio Big Band of Cologne, Germany. Because of the response worldwide, Michael has made his compositions and arrangements available to schools and bands and serves as a clinician, and is currently working on his own 11-piece band consisting of two trumpets, french horn, tenor and bass trombone, three reeds and rhythm section. Michael joined the faculty of Manhattan School of Music in January 1998. In 2001 Michael was instrumental in creating a course entitled "Jazz Composition and Arranging for The Studio Orchestra" and in 2003, a Doctoral in Jazz program. John Williams | Hal Leonard John Williams In a career spanning more than six decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices.  He has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films, including all nine Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone and The Book Thief.  His nearly 50-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, Lincoln, The BFG and The Post.  His contributions to television music include scores for more than 200 television films for the groundbreaking, early anthology series Alcoa Theatre, Kraft Television Theatre, Chrysler Theatre and Playhouse 90, as well as themes for NBC Nightly News (“The Mission”), NBC’s Meet the Press, and the PBS arts showcase Great Performances.  He also composed themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.  He has received five Academy Awards and fifty-two Oscar nominations, making him the Academy’s most-nominated living person and the second-most nominated person in the history of the Oscars. He has received seven British Academy Awards (BAFTA), twenty-five Grammys, four Golden Globes, five Emmys, and numerous gold and platinum records.  In 2003, he received the Olympic Order (the IOC’s highest honor) for his contributions to the Olympic movement.  He received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in December of 2004.  In 2009, Mr. Williams was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and he received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the U.S. Government.  In 2016, he received the 44th Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute – the first time in their history that this honor was bestowed upon a composer. In 2020, he received Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, as well as the Gold Medal from the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society in the UK. In January 1980, Mr. Williams was named nineteenth music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler.  He currently holds the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor which he assumed following his retirement in December 1993 after fourteen highly successful seasons.  He also holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood.  Mr. Williams has composed numerous works for the concert stage, among them two symphonies, and concertos commissioned by several of the world’s leading orchestras, including a cello concerto for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a bassoon concerto for the New York Philharmonic, a trumpet concerto for The Cleveland Orchestra, and a horn concerto for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  In 2009, the Boston Symphony premiered his concerto for harp and orchestra entitled “On Willows and Birches”, and in the same year, Mr. Williams composed and arranged “Air and Simple Gifts” especially for the first inaugural ceremony of President Barack Obama.
