Throughout his career, Camille Saint-Saëns composed nearly 150 songs. A short while before his death, in 1921, he bade farewell to songwriting with the delivery of Trois Vieilles Chansons. Along with the Cinq Poèmes de Ronsard, composed in the same year, this final collection shows Saint-Saëns returning to the poetry of the 15th and 16th centuries, a source from which Charles Gounod, Georges Bizet and Jules Massenet had already drawn.
