Michael Praetorius (ca. 1571-1621) was a German composer, organist, and music theorist. He was one of the most versatile composers of his age, being particularly significant in the development of musical forms based on Protestant hymns. This setting is transposed up a minor third from the original source, with sopranos divided into two parts in first and third verses and four parts in the second verse.
