The Czech composer Julyus Fuc<breve>ik (1872-1916) studied violin, bassoon and • with Antonín Dvor<caron>ák • composition at the Prague Conservatory. During his spell as a bandmaster in the Austro-Hungarian army he wrote a number of popular marches. Some of these, such as “Florentiner-Marsch” and “Entry of the Gladiators”, also known as “Circus Music”, are considered to be the epitome of their genre.
