He would be the leader of the group if hyenas weren't so lazy. Look for an outgoing and confident actor who can portray nastiness and gruffness. As Banzai is always featured with Shenzi and Ed, consider auditioning the hyenas in trios. Male, Any Age ED The third member of Scar's trio of lackeys. He has a loud, cackling laugh that is his only form of communication. Ed should be played by an actor who can laugh unabashedly and communicate through physicality and facial expressions rather than words. This role can be played by a boy or girl. Male or Female, Any Age ENSEMBLE The ensemble plays various inhabitants of the Pridelands, such as giraffes, elephants, antelopes, wildebeest, and other creatures you choose to include. This group can have as few or as many performers as your production permits. Be sure to cast many strong singers. There are also several moments to showcase individual dancers in "The Lioness Hunt" and "I Just Can't Wait to Be King." HYENAS Scar's army, helping carry out his evil plot to take over the Pridelands. Hyenas are mangy, mindless creatures who sing in "Be Prepared." Cast actors who are able to sing the background parts of that song while playing the loud and raucous characters. Your hyenas can double as animals of the Pridelands or lionesses. Male or Female, Any Age LIONESSES The fierce hunters of the Pridelands and featured in "The Lioness Hunt," "The Mourning," and "Shadowland." These actors should be strong singers, as the material can be challenging. Depending on the complexity of your choreography, particuarly for "The Lioness Hunt," strong dancers may be desirable as well. Female, Any Age MUFASA The strong, honorable, and wise lion who leads the Pridelands. Mufasa should command respect onstage and also show tenderness with his son, Simba. Cast a mature actor who can convincingly portray the king. Male, Any Age Range: B3 - C5 NALA Grows from a cub to a lioness before she confronts Scar, so cast a more mature actress to play the character beginning in Scene 10, As with older Simba and Young Simba, ensure that this switch in actors performing a single role is clear. Direct the actors to share a mask or costume piece that distinctly represents Nala, as well as a movement vocabulary. Female, Any Age Range: G3 - E5 PUMBAA A kindhearted, sensitive warthog who enjoys his simple life of grubs and relaxation. Cast a boy or girl who can portray this loveable and loyal friend to Timon and Simba with deadpan humor. Male or Female, Any Age Range: D4 - G5 RAFIKI A wise mandrill who acts as healer of the Pridelands and guides Simba on his journey home. She is an omniscient character, evincing an air of mystery. Rafiki has significant solos in "Circle of Life" and "He Lives in You," and leads the African chants throughout the show, so cast a confident performer with a strong singing voice. Female, Any Age Range: A3 - C5 SARABI A featured lioness, Mufasa's mate, and Simba's mother. Sarabi has a few key speaking lines for an actor who can deliver the care and command of a queen. Female, Any Age SARAFINA A featured lioness and Nala's mother. She has one short, spoken line, so consider giving this part to an actor who is putting in a lot of effort and hard work in rehearsal as a lioness. Female, Any Age SCAR The antagonist of the show, overcome with jealousy of his brother, Mufasa, and nephew, Simba. Coldhearted and wickedly intelligent, he will stop at nothing to become king of the Pridelands. Cast a mature performer who can bring out this villain's dark side while handling Scar's sarcastic sense of humor. As his solos can be spoken, opt for an actor over a singer. Male, Any Age Range: A3 - A4 SHENZI One of Scar's hyenas who plot to take over the Pridelands. She is the sassy one of the trio and is always looking out for herself. With Banzai and Ed, she should be able to laugh loudly and long, as well as be menacing to Young Simba and Young Nala. Female, Any Age SIMBA Grows from a cub to lion in "Hakuna Matata." Older Simba has more complex moments as he reunites with Nala, mourns his father, and returns to confront Scar, so cast a more mature actor. Be sure that the change in actors is clear: Try having Young Simba hand-off a costume piece, such as a medallion, to older Simba. Also be sure that Simba and Young Simba share a movement vocabulary. Male, Any Age Range: B3 - E5 TIMON An outcast meerkat who lives in the jungle with Pumbaa. He is afraid of his own shadow, but pretends to be the confident, relaxed leader of the duo. Timon is one of the funniest characters in the show and should be played by a charismatic actor who understands comic timing. This part can be played by a boy or a girl. Male or Female, Any Age Range: B3 - B4 YOUNG NALA A courageous lion and Young Simba's best friend. She is not afraid to speak her mind. While Young Nala does sing a little, look for a strong female performer who can portray this confident cub. Female, Any Age Range: A3 - C5 YOUNG SIMBA The protagonist of the story, is an adventurous and endearing cub who can't wait to be king of the Pridelands. Simba is playful, energetic, and naive, but after his father Mufasa's death, Simba struggles with shame and his destiny. Cast a strong singer and dynamic performer in this role. Male, Any Age Range: B3 - E5 ZAZU The anxious yet loyal assistant to Mufasa who is always busy trying to do his duty. Zazu's lyrics are spoken rather than sung, and the role can be played by a boy or girl. Male or Female, Any Age

Laurence Wittig | Hal Leonard Laurence Wittig Laurence Wittig is a life-long resident of Arizona whose choral works can be found in the catalogues of several publishing companies. He is a graduate of Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University. For 34 years he was Director of Choral Activities at Paradise Valley High School in Phoenix, Arizona, but has experience teaching grades 5-12. He is Past President of Arizona ACDA and has also been an officer in Arizona Music Educators Association. He also has 40 years experience in church music. Paris Rutherford | Hal Leonard Paris Rutherford Paris Rutherford is considered one of the top vocal jazz arrangers in the country today. His arrangements focus carefully on singability in the lyric and voice leading, and are crafted to bring an unusual touch to the music. Mr. Rutherford is Professor in Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas, where he directs the award-winning UNT Jazz Singers and teaches courses in jazz arranging, song writing, and broadcast music. He also heads the degree program in vocal jazz. Under Rutherford's direction, the Jazz Singers have performed for the International Association for Jazz Education, Music Educators National Conference, American Choral Directors Association, and many jazz festivals around the country, as well as for the summer vocal jazz workshop, held annually on the UNT campus. Their recordings are heard on six CDs. Paris Rutherford brings a wealth of experience to his vocal jazz writing. A former member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Summer Musicals (trombone), and long experience as performer, composer and producer in the recording studios of Dallas, Los Angeles, London, England, and Cologne, Germany, his arrangements reflect the diversity of those varied activities. Michael Brown | Hal Leonard Michael Brown Michael Brown is a native of New Orleans, LA. He earned his M.M. in Music Theory from The University of Texas at Austin and his B.M. in Music Theory from Furman University in Greenville, SC. Michael served as Chief Arranger for The United States Army Band ("Pershing's Own") in Washington, DC, having served previously as Chief Arranger for The United States Military Academy Band at West Point, NY. His arranging credits include: the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, UT, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC. Nancy Price | Hal Leonard Nancy Price Nancy Price holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in music education from Ithaca College and, for several years, was a high school choral director. She is actively involved in the music program at Perinton Presbyterian Church in Fairport, New York and frequently performs as a soloist and guest conductor. Nancy has been writing with her former teacher, Don Besig, since 1980 and together they have collaborated on more than 300 compositions for school and church choirs. She is a member of MENC, NYSSMA, Sigma Alpha Iota, and ASCAP and is the recipient of several ASCAP special awards. Jeffrey A. Smith | Hal Leonard Jeffrey A. Smith Jeffrey A. Smith started his music training at the age of eight, and within a few years began composing music by creating new melodies from the chordal structure of Christmas carols. By the age of sixteen, Jeff was actively involved in the music ministry at his church, where he played the piano for both the English and Spanish church services. Since then, Jeff has gained invaluable experience in hymn playing, improvisation, arranging, and composing. These years have allowed Jeff to compose and arrange new choral anthems, and his first choral arrangement was published in 2005. Jeff's published anthems are now listed under the Shawnee Press and Hal Leonard names, and other well-known publishing houses. Jeff holds degrees from Bob Jones University and Nova Southeastern University. Pamela Stewart | Hal Leonard Pamela Stewart Pamela Stewart (b. 1953) has more than 150 pieces in publication with Shawnee Press and other major publishers. Several of her pieces have been honored by Creator Magazine in its ""Select 20"" anthems. In 2000, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation commissioned her to write a song cycle for chorus and symphony. Entitled “Sing for the Cure,"" it has been performed at Carnegie Hall and has been recorded featuring Dr. Maya Angelou as narrator. Ms. Stewart has collaborated with such well-known composers as Craig Courtney, Patti Drennan, Mark Hayes and Lloyd Larson. Jane Trotter | Hal Leonard Jane Trotter Jane Trotter graduated from Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand, with a B.A. in English, a bachelor's degree in piano performance and a post-graduate diploma. In 1991 she completed her LTCL performer's diploma, and in 1996 was awarded a Royal School of Music Centenary Travel Grant Scholarship, with which she traveled to London and studied at the Royal College of Music, where she gained her LRSM teaching diploma. Jane has extensive experience as a private piano teacher in her studio and in local schools and has instructed students of various ages. Keenly involved in Dunedin's music environment, Jane has adjudicated local competitions, teaches beginning recorder and clarinet with the Sunday Morning Music Classes and is an active member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers of New Zealand. Heather Sorenson | Hal Leonard Heather Sorenson Heather Sorenson entered the church music industry in her twenties, and her name quickly became a welcomed fixture in the publishing world. Heather is hired by the largest and most respected publishers in the world, and her pieces remain at the top of Bestsellers lists and Editor's Choice selections. Diversity is the characteristic that makes Heather somewhat of an anomaly in the industry: she easily maneuvers both the traditional and contemporary genres of Christian music, often combining the two for a unique blend that has become her artistic fingerprint. Initially recognized for her skill as a pianist, Heather is now known for her compositions in choral anthems, solo piano collections, and orchestrations. Her works are performed regularly at competitions, concerts, recitals, and churches worldwide. In the past several years, Heather has appeared multiple times at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Constitution Hall. In her latest Carnegie performance, Heather was the arranger and orchestrator of the new critically acclaimed neo-classical oratorio EXODUS, which had its world premiere on President's Day of 2015. Although her career is sometimes on a big stage, Heather’s heart is leading the Church in worship, and she feels that her greatest calling is using her music to connect people with God. Years of experience as a church music administrator and music educator have proven to be invaluable experience, and teaching has become a large part of Heather's ministry. She taught all elementary levels of music at Grace Academy of Dallas for 4 years, served as an adjunct music professor at Baylor University, and has served on many master class panels in piano and songwriting. Heather regularly is a guest speaker and conductor at churches across America, and leads scores of sessions each year at various worship conferences, schools, and universities. Currently Heather spends her time juggling a full writing load as well as traveling as a guest artist and lecturer. Exigence Choral Series Inspired by the mission of Sphinx, the mission of EXIGENCE is to promote excellence and diversity through choral music within Black and Latinx communities by creating a platform for soloists and composers of color while inspiring and challenging audiences around the country and world. EXIGENCE gives vocal artists a first-rate professional vocal experience within a context that champions the sounds of Black and Latinx composers. Selected through audition, 32 vocalists have the opportunity to use their voices as vehicles for change within the cultural landscape of concert choral and vocal music. The name EXIGENCE is inspired by the definition of the word – ‘an urgent need or demand.’ Like its definition, EXIGENCE believes that vocal concert music continues to need more voices at the table from disparate backgrounds and perspectives. EXIGENCE seeks to foster that perspective through the lens of professional vocal artistry within the Black and Latinx communities. The EXIGENCE series is curated by Dr. Eugene Rogers, a GRAMMY® Award-nominee, pedagogue, director of choirs, and associate professor of conducting at the University of Michigan, and former national chair of Diversity Initiatives for the American Choral Directors Association.

Sharon Burch | Hal Leonard Sharon Burch Sharon Burch began teaching general music in 1987. Constantly pursuing the best methods of educationally connecting with students, she is a certified teacher with the International Piano Teaching Foundation, earned a master’s degree as a Professional Educator and uses a combination of strategies to enable kids to experience concepts in the classroom. Teaching creatively, Sharon introduced Freddie the Frog to her classroom of music students in 1995 and discovered the magic of games, storytelling and puppetry in teaching. She authored Freddie the Frog and the Thump in the Night, Freddie the Frog and the Bass Clef Monster, Freddie the Frog and the Mysterious Wahooooo, and Freddie the Frog and the Secret of Crater Island as the first of several adventuresome stories introducing fundamental music concepts. Collaborating with jazz double bass player and elementary educator, Sherry Luchette, the next book introduces jazz through scat and improv in an interactive story—Freddie the Frog and the Flying Jazz Kitten. Sharon and Sherry serve on the Jazz Education Network Elementary Jazz Committee. Sharon enjoys sharing her teaching strategies atmusic conferences and clinics with teachers around the globe and teaches general music to the K-3 students in the Centerville Community School District in Centerville, Iowa.
