Hal Hopson | Hal Leonard Hal Hopson Hal H. Hopson (b. 1933) is a full-time composer/church music clinician residing in Dallas, Texas. He has over 1,000 published works, which include almost every musical form in church music. With a special interest in congregational song, he continues to make a significant contribution to the new repertoire of hymn-tunes and responsorial psalm settings as evidenced by the proliferation of his settings that are included in hymnals and psalm collections. His cantata, God with Us, was one of the few compositions selected by a panel at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C., to be placed in a capsule during the American Bicentennial in 1976. The capsule will be opened at the Tercentennial in 2076 and will be heard again as a representative piece of American choral composition of this century. Mr. Hopson is active as a conductor and clinician, having conducted choral festivals and workshops in this country, Europe, and Asia. More recently he has been recognized for his contribution to music by being included in The International Who's Who in Music, Cambridge, England, and by being awarded the esteemed title of National Patron by Delta Omicron, a national professional fraternity of musicians. He is active in several professional organizations, having served on the national boards of The Presbyterian Association of Musicians and Choristers Guild. As a member of ASCAP, Mr. Hopson has received an annual award from that agency for many consecutive years.

About Us | Hal Leonard Hal Leonard Corporate History In the late 1930s in Winona, Minnesota, the late Harold "Hal" Edstrom, his brother Everett "Leonard" Edstrom and their friend Roger Busdicker had formed a very popular dance band. Concerned that their conservative father wouldn't approve of using the family name for a band, Harold and Ev took parts of their names and called the band Hal Leonard. As leader of the Hal Leonard Band, Ev eventually became known as "Hal Leonard." The company Hal Leonard was founded in 1947, after the Hal Leonard Band broke up. At the time, Ev started a music store using the Hal Leonard name while Roger and Harold were both directing award-winning high school bands in Winona. In those days, most school bands played serious classical literature, but Harold and Roger had the unique ability because of their professional experience to arrange popular music for school bands. Soon band directors across the US wanted their arrangements. They started to mimeograph copies and sell them. They realized that to successfully (and legally!) launch a new publishing company, they needed to license songs, so they ventured to New York's Tin Pan Alley in search of copyrights. What they got on their trip was an education in publishing and the rights to "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now," one of the most popular songs of the day. Eventually, many music publishers in New York were licensing Hal Leonard to do school band arrangements of their songs. Thus began their publishing business and an entirely new industry. Hal Leonard continued to grow and expand into other areas, including instructional materials and repertoire for every instrument, voice, and ensemble. In 1970, Keith Mardak and associates started a new division of Hal Leonard called Learning Unlimited to create the first book/audio music instructional products. This division soon outgrew the company, and Mardak was named general manager for all of Hal Leonard. In 1985, an internal management team led by Mardak purchased Hal Leonard from its original founders. A new corporate headquarters was opened in Milwaukee, WI, in addition to expanding the Winona facilities to handle the company's dramatic growth. Under Mardak's leadership, Hal Leonard dramatically increased its publishing output and pursued a series of acquisitions, leading to an unprecedented period of expansion for the company. Today, Hal Leonard is the world's largest print music publisher, with the #1 methods for learning guitar, piano, band, orchestra, plus publications for learning virtually every instrument imaginable. In addition, they distribute other esteemed publishers including Berklee Press, Boosey & Hawkes, DeHaske Publications, Faber Piano Adventures, G. Henle Verlag, Robert King, Peermusic Classical, G. Hal Leonard developed SheetMusicDirect.com in 1997 (four years BEFORE iTunes!) with thousands of songs arranged for different instruments available for download. GuitarInstructor.com followed, featuring online video guitar lessons and tab arrangements for thousands of songs. In addition, the company expanded by purchasing Noteflight.com, a music composition website, and Groove3, a website providing online training for music technology. In addition, Essential Elements Interactive was added to the Essential Elements Band and Strings methods which added a valuable online component to benefit both instructors and students. Over a half million students access EEi during the school year. Hal Leonard continued the tradition of innovation in print music with the development of MyLibrary, a cloud-based portal for their books with online content. Customers who purchase books with online audio, access the content online using the unique code inside each book. Audio can be streamed or downloaded and includes PLAYBACK+, a multi-functional audio player that allows you to slow down audio without changing pitch, set loop points, change keys, and pan left or right. Emily Crocker | Hal Leonard Emily Crocker Emily Holt Crocker, former Director of the Milwaukee Children's Choir, is recognized nationally as one of the leading experts in children's choirs. After a successful 15-year career as a music teacher and choral director in her native Texas, she joined the music publishing industry, and became Vice President of Choral Publications for Hal Leonard in Milwaukee and is Senior Author and Editor of the Essential Elements for Choir textbook series. She holds degrees from the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University, and has done additional study at UNT (choral conducting), Westminster Choir College (conducting and voice-building), TWU (vocal pedagogy) and Sam Houston State University (Kodaly methods). Stacey Nordmeyer | Hal Leonard Stacey Nordmeyer Stacey Nordmeyer began her career in music publishing as a choral editor and was an editor for the textbook series Experiencing Choral Music, as well as for numerous sight-singing methods, along with music for school, church and community choirs. Now, as General Manager, Choral Publications, she oversees the choral publication process for both Hal Leonard and Shawnee Press. She is also a celebrated composer and arranger, with anthems published in both the Hal Leonard and Shawnee Press church catalogs. She has been active in church music for over 35 years, having served as music director, worship leader, and accompanist at various churches throughout southeastern Wisconsin. She currently directs the praise bands and the adult handbell choir at UNITY Lutheran Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Stacey holds a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in piano and music theory from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and she is a member of the Milwaukee Handbell Ensemble. Phillip Keveren | Hal Leonard Phillip Keveren A multi-talented keyboard artist and composer, Phillip Keveren displays a tremendous versatility in both his original works and concert performances. He composes in a variety of genres, and is widely acclaimed for his piano publications. Mr. Keveren is a prolific arranger, orchestrator and producer. His work is featured in numerous instrumental recordings, church choral, educational piano and Christian artist releases. His arrangements and compositions appear on recent projects by Sandi Patty, Travis Cottrell, Sara Groves and Ronan Tynan. Phillip is co-author, major composer and orchestrator of the internationally acclaimed Hal Leonard Student Piano Library, a complete method for young students. Jeff Reeves | Hal Leonard Jeff Reeves Jeff Reeves serves as Choral Music Editor with Hal Leonard Corporation in Milwaukee. In his role at Hal Leonard, Jeff serves as the primary editor for the Discovery Choral Series and the Shawnee Press sacred choral catalog for children, Worship Songs Junior. Jeff also serves as the Director of Children’s Music Ministries at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa. In this position, Jeff coordinates and directs choral and handbell choirs for children in pre-kindergarten through 6th grade. Since 1990, Jeff has specialized in the field of church music for children. His work in both the music publishing industry and the local church has given him the unique opportunity to understand the needs of children’s choirs within the larger ecumenical community. He is the author of numerous publications including children’s music curriculum materials, teaching articles, as well as choral and handbell works for children of all ages. Jeff holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and a Master of Church Music degree from Southern Theological Seminary.
