Ryan O'Connell | Hal Leonard Ryan O'Connell Ryan O'Connell is in demand as a composer, arranger, orchestrator, music director, and conductor. His music has been heard worldwide in a variety of venues: in film, on stage, and in the concert hall. He is perhaps most widely known for his popular choral arrangements for Shawnee Press and Alfred. After graduating from the prestigious Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program at the University of Southern California, Ryan has begun to make his mark writing music for media, with his music featured in prominent works such as "Dragons: Riders of Berk" (Cartoon Network). He has also orchestrated and conducted scores for TV and film, such as "Nightline" (NBC), “Wild Things” (NRDC Films), and “Browsers” (Amazon). In the world of musical theatre, Ryan is actively working as an orchestrator and music director, having been involved in over 50 stage productions. Most recently he was the lead orchestrator and music director for the Seattle premiere of “Ernest Shackleton Loves Me” at Seattle Repertory Theatre. Additionally, he recently orchestrated Marshall Pailet’s newest show, Loch Ness. He has also written two musicals of his own, and continues to develop ideas and music for the stage. Baruch Cohon | Hal Leonard Baruch Cohon Baruch Cohon has served as rabbi and/or cantor in California congregations including 11 years at Valley Beth Israel, 21 years at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills , and as lecturer and discussion leader for University of Judaism , Hebrew Union College , and Jewish Centers of L.A. He received his BA from UCLA, studying arranging and film orchestration with Boris Kremenliev while majoring in Motion Pictures. He studied cantorial music with A. Z. Idelsohn and Jacob Beimel, and received rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Dr. Henoch Singer. He was musical editor on the 3rd edition of Idelsohn's Jewish Song Book, and wrote "The Structure of the Synagogue Prayer Chant" for the American Musicological Society Journal. His recordings include Generation to Generation (SCB Records), The Complete Passover Sing-along Seder and You Can't Lose 'em All (Worldwide Success Records). John Moss | Hal Leonard John Moss John Moss (1948-2010) was active nationwide as a composer, arranger, and orchestrator in a wide variety of musical styles and formats. As a composer, he had an extensive background creating original music for documentary, educational, and promotional films. As an arranger, he provided music for many live large-scale musical revues and production shows. John created the arrangements for Speak Low, a CD featuring Las Vegas trombonist John Haig with a 46-piece studio orchestra. John's educational background included undergraduate study in instrumental music at Central Michigan University and graduate work in theory and composition at Michigan State University. He taught at both public school (band and choir) and university (theory) levels in Michigan. John's music is a major contribution to the band and orchestra catalog of educational music publisher Hal Leonard Corporation and he has several hundred published works to his credit. He also served as arranger for the Disney educational project "Magic Music Days," where young performing musicians are introduced to the film scoring/recording process. He accepted numerous school band and orchestra commissions, and enjoyed writing for the Detroit Symphony Pops, the Canadian Brass, and the Detroit Chamber Winds. In 2004, John and three fellow orchestrators transcribed approximately 90 minutes of orchestral music by film composer John Williams for a Kennedy Center concert featuring the United States Marine Band, with Mr. Williams conducting. Paul Langford | Hal Leonard Paul Langford A Chicago based singer, arranger, keyboardist, producer and conductor, Paul Langford has a career that spans over 25 years. His work includes arranging for and performing with groups such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicagoland Pops, the Grand Rapids, Pensacola, Anderson (IN) and LaCrosse Symphony Orchestras and for Walt Disney World.¶As a singer and pianist, Paul has performed or recorded with Grammy Award winners Celine Dion, David Foster, Kenny Rogers, Yolanda Adams, Abraham Laboriel and Heather Headley, has shared the stage with Michael Buble and Josh Groban, and has performed for President Bill Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama.¶His voice has been heard on radio and TV commericials for such companies as Ronald McDonald House, Oldsmobile, L.L. Bean, Old El Paso, Nintendo, Frigidaire, and Nickelodeon. He has also led and arranged for choirs, rhythm sections, big bands, orchestra and a cappella groups all across America and abroad and is a published choral arranger and composer.¶In the Chicago area, Paul can be heard singing and playing keyboards with the Tom VanKanegan and the Z Orchestras. Paul also owns and operates a state-of-the-art recording studio in Chicago's northern suburbs, where he produces recording artists and composes music for video and film. Buryl Red | Hal Leonard Buryl Red Buryl Red, as a composer, arranger, conductor, orchestrator and producer, has participated in literally thousands of projects, many of them award-winning, for television, film, recording and publishing around the world. Starting with his first public performance at age four as soloist in a tent revival in his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, his musical life has been unusually diverse and eclectic. After earning degrees in music from Baylor University and Yale University, he took up residence in New York City where he has one of the most advanced digital and computer music studios in the city. Several of his choral works are considered landmarks in their fields. He has been author, consultant and producer of some of the most widely used school music textbooks in the United States. He is the Musical Director of The Centurymen, a professional male chorus whose members are themselves choral conductors. His works have been described by the Washington Post as "uncommonly creative."

Paul Lavender | Hal Leonard Paul Lavender As Vice President of Instrumental Publications for Hal Leonard Corporation, Paul Lavender directs the product development and marketing of Hal Leonard’s extensive catalog of performance publications for orchestra, concert band, marching band, and jazz ensemble, as well as instrumental books, collections and methods. Paul supervises the creative work of many of the industry’s most respected composers and arrangers, publishing over 600 new instrumental publications each year. His longtime association with renowned film composer John Williams has produced the prestigious John Williams Signature Series, featuring Williams’ authentic film scores and concert music for professional orchestras. In addition, Paul has served as music supervisor and arranger for several of Williams’ concerts and special events, including the 2003 and 2008 Marine Band Anniversary Concerts, the 2004 Rose Bowl, and the 2004 Kennedy Center Honors program (televised on CBS). John Williams | Hal Leonard John Williams In a career spanning more than six decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films, including all nine Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone and The Book Thief. His nearly 50-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, Lincoln, The BFG and The Post. His contributions to television music include scores for more than 200 television films for the groundbreaking, early anthology series Alcoa Theatre, Kraft Television Theatre, Chrysler Theatre and Playhouse 90, as well as themes for NBC Nightly News (“The Mission”), NBC’s Meet the Press, and the PBS arts showcase Great Performances. Jay Bocook | Hal Leonard Jay Bocook Jay Bocook is internationally recognized as a composer, arranger, conductor, and educator. His works have been performed at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. In 2003, Bocook was a contributing arranger to the musical CyberJam, which opened to rave reviews at London's Queen's Theatre. Currently he is working as the arranger for Blast! The Music of Disney, which will open in Tokyo, Japan in the summer of 2017. In 2003, the U.S. Marine Band premiered Jay's transcriptions of the film music of John Williams at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. An encore performance with Williams and "The President's Own" took place in 2008. Jay's transcription of Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Suite from "On the Waterfront" can be heard on the 2015 Marine Band CD Elements. In 1982, Bocook was appointed director of bands at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. In 1989, he left to pursue other opportunities as an arranger for Jenson Publications, but returned to Furman in 2000 as Director of Athletic Bands. He remains a principal composer and arranger for Hal Leonard, where he has published over 600 arrangements and original compositions. Bocook served as arranger for the ten-time world champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps from 1993-2016, and currently serves in the same capacity for the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps of Denver, CO. Robert Buckley | Hal Leonard Robert Buckley Robert Buckley has a diverse career as a composer, arranger, performer, producer, recording artist and conductor. In the pop world, he created several albums and hit songs with labels such as CBS and A&M. The number one single “Letting Go” won him a gold record. He conducted and arranged for major artists such as Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan and Aerosmith, to name a few. In the film and television world, he scored numerous award-winning shows for Disney, Alliance, ABC, FOX, CBS, PBS, CBC and the Cartoon Network. In the live stage world, he composed music for contemporary dance, musicals and large-scale worldwide television events including the Calgary Olympics, the Victoria Commonwealth Games, the Vancouver Olympics and the FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony with Cirque Du Soleil. He composed “This Is My Home” for the Canadian Pavilion at the World Expo – a song that has been performed at every Canada Day since and has become a Canadian tradition. In the concert world, his symphonic compositions have been performed worldwide. Robert has served as composer-in-residence at several universities and for many years at the Con Brio Whistler Music Festival. He has recorded several CDs of his symphonic wind music: “Continuum”, “Undercurrents”, “Seas Of The Moon” and most recently recorded his Third Symphony “Quebec Mosaic” with the Royal 22nd Regiment Band in Quebec City. Stephen Bulla | Hal Leonard Stephen Bulla Stephen Bulla began his musical instruction at age 6, growing up in a musical household where his father played tuba and his mother played piano. He eventually graduated Magna Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied trombone with Phil Wilson and Composition/Arranging with Herb Pomeroy. In 1980 he won an audition for the position of Staff Arranger to "The President's Own" United States Marine Band and Chamber Orchestra in Washington DC. For the next thirty years he would provide musical scores for a myriad of White House events, beginning with the Reagan era until 2010. Working alongside film score legend John Williams he has transcribed music from "Star Wars," "Catch Me If You Can," and "Close Encounters" for performances by the Marine Band with the composer conducting. These arrangements are now published for wind band by Hal Leonard Corporation. He has also scored music for the Discovery Channel (“Wings of the Luftwaffe” and “Century of Flight”) and PBS television series “In Performance At The White House”. On those occasions his arrangements were performed by Sarah Vaughan, The Manhattan Transfer, Mel Torme, Doc Severinsen, Nell Carter, Shirley Jones, Larry Gatlin, and Jordan Sparks. His commissioned concert works are performed and recorded internationally. The Dutch, British, Swiss and New Zealand Brass Band Championship organizations have all commissioned test pieces from his pen. Rene Clausen | Hal Leonard Rene Clausen René Clausen has served as conductor of The Concordia Choir of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., since 1986. Additionally, he is the artistic director of the award-winning Concordia Christmas Concerts, which are frequently featured by PBS stations throughout the nation. Clausen is a well-known composer whose choral compositions are currently published by Roger Dean, Augsburg Fortress, Santa Barbara, Walton, Hal Leonard, Mark Foster and Shawnee Press. His compositional style is varied and eclectic, ranging from works appropriate for high school and church choirs to more technically demanding compositions for college and professional choirs. Interested in composing for various media, Clausen’s compositional interests include works for the stage, solo voice, film and video composition, choral/orchestral compositions and arrangements, as well as works for orchestra and wind ensemble. He regularly composes on a commission basis, and is a frequent guest conductor and composer-in-residence on an international basis. In addition to choral conducting, Clausen is increasingly well known as a guest conductor of the major literature for choir and orchestra. At Carnegie Hall he has guest conducted the Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, Mozart Requiem and Mass in C Minor, together with the New York premiere of three of his own works, Gloria (in three movements), Whispers of Heavenly Death, with text by Walt Whitman, and Communion, with text by George Macdonald. Other major choral/orchestral works he has conducted include the Poulenc Gloria, Vaughan Williams Hodie, Beethoven Mass in C Major and Choral Fantasy, and Fauré Requiem. Other recent works include The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere and Celebration Canticles. In the summer of 1998, Clausen established the René Clausen Choral School held on the campus of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota. Much more than a reading workshop, the choral school is an intensive, five-day program for choral conductors focusing on conducting and rehearsal technique, performance practice issues, elements of choral ensemble, tonal development, as well as daily reading sessions of new music. Greg Gilpin | Hal Leonard Greg Gilpin Greg Gilpin is a celebrated ASCAP award-winning choral composer and arranger and a highly respected choral conductor. He is known throughout the United States leading performances at New York City’s iconic Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center as well as Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. His international appearances include the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, Royal Festival Hall in London, England and Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland. Mr. Gilpin is also a producer and musician in the recording industry and is Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press, a distinguished choral publisher. In 2020, Mr. Gilpin’s “pandemic pivot” took him down an additional career path by becoming certified as a financial coach and a certified Boss Organizer, creating his own professional organizing business, Maestro Organizing. This work has led to appearances on Fox and NBC network affiliates. Mr. Gilpin can also be seen on the hit TV show “Hoarders,” alongside Dorothy Breininger, renowned producer and organizer. In 2021, Mr. Gilpin wrote the score for the award-winning short film, “Rosie’s Rescue” and was awarded “Best Score” for this same movie. He also teamed up with well-known opera singer, Angela Brown, and created the world premiere of a thrilling new arrangement of “What Child is This?”, debuted by Ms. Brown and the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. Dwight Gustafson | Hal Leonard Dwight Gustafson Dwight Leonard Gustafson (1930 - 2014) was a composer, conductor, and dean emeritus of the School of Fine Arts, Bob Jones University. Gustafson was born in Seattle, Washington. Despite early violin training, Gustafson was attracted to a career in art and design. As a sophomore at Bob Jones University, he was asked to make sketches for a production of Cyrano de Bergerac and ended by designing the sets. In 1954, shortly before graduating from BJU with an M.A. in music, he was flabbergasted to be asked by the then-president, Bob Jones, Jr., to become dean of the School of Fine Arts at the age of 24. Eventually he also earned a D. Mus. in composition from Florida State University, and in 1960, he was selected as one of ten young conductors to study at the Aspen School of Music. Gustafson quickly proved to be a competent administrator who brought to his position a working knowledge of art, music, and drama. He also regularly conducted campus choirs and the Bob Jones Symphony Orchestra, especially in its annual opera productions. Nevertheless, outside fundamentalist circles, Gustafson is best known for his compositions and arrangements, which include more than 160 works, including five film scores, a string quartet, and numerous extended compositions for chorus and orchestra including Three Psalms for Chorus and Orchestra (1989) and Words of Passion and Resurrection (2002). When Dwight Gustafson retired as dean after forty years of service, Bob Jones University named the Gustafson Fine Arts Center in his honor. In 1999, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto. Gustafson continued to conduct occasional programs at BJU, and remained active as a conductor of high school all-state choirs and orchestras, and regularly conducted church choir clinics throughout the United States. Luigi Zaninelli | Hal Leonard Luigi Zaninelli The music of Luigi Zaninelli (b. 1932) is known to performers and audiences around the world for work that excites the senses and stimulates the mind. Following high school, he was brought to the Curtis Institute of Music by Gian-Carlo Menotti. At age 19, he was sent to Italy by the Curtis Institute to study composition with the legendary Rosario Scalero (the teacher of Samuel Barber and Menotti). Upon graduation, he was appointed to the faculty of the Curtis Institute. In 1958, Zaninelli began his long relationship with Shawnee Press as composer/arranger/pianist/conductor. In 1964, he returned to Rome, Italy to compose film music for RCA Italiana. During that period, he became conductor/arranger for Metropolitan Opera soprano Anna Moffo. During his career, he has served as composer-in-residence at the University of Calgary and the Banff School of Fine Arts. Since 1973, he has been the composer-in-residence at the University of Southern Mississippi. Among his numerous honors are a Steinway Prize; ASCAP Awards; and Outstanding Achievement Award, Province of Alberta. In 1991, he became the first four-time winner of the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Music Award. With more than 300 published works to his credit, Zaninelli has been commissioned to compose for all mediums including opera, ballet, chamber music, orchestra, band, chorus and solo songs. He has also composed several movie and television scores, including the PBS documentaries: The Islander, Passover, and The Last Confederates. Luigi Zaninelli's music is known both under his name and his pseudonym, Lou Hayward. Writing as Lou Hayward, he brings a unique, sophisticated style to popular music. John La Barbera | Hal Leonard John La Barbera John La Barbera started playing cornet when he was five; by the age of seven he was performing with his parents and brothers Pat and Joe in the La Barbera Family Band, and by the late sixties he was playing trumpet and touring the world in the great Buddy Rich Orchestra. This was the beginning of his 19-year association with Buddy as his principal composer/arranger. John’s studies at the S.U.N.Y at Potsdam, Berklee College, the Eastman School of Music, and private study with Rayburn Wright contributed to his love of writing and strengthened his skills for a career in composition and arranging. He went on to play and write for many renowned big bands and is now one of the most respected composer/arrangers in jazz. His works have been recorded and performed by Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Tormé, Chaka Khan, Harry James, Bill Watrous, Bill Perkins, Al Cohn and Phil Woods, to name just a few. John's Grammy-nominated big band CD On The Wild Side, Fantazm, and his latest Caravan have been met with tremendous artistic and commercial success. As co-producer and arranger for The Glenn Miller Orchestra Christmas recordings (In The Christmas Mood I & II), he has received Gold, Double and Triple Platinum records. He is a co-founder of the internationally acclaimed women’s big band DIVA, and has contributed work as an orchestrator for Broadway shows, with A Chorus Line being the most notable. A former Director of Jazz Ensembles at Cornell University, Mr. La Barbera is now Professor Emeritis of Music at the University of Louisville, where he implemented and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in composition and arranging, TV and film scoring, and music industry. During his seven-year term as jazz editor of the International Trumpet Guild, his interviews with the world's leading jazz trumpet artists were a regular feature of the ITG Journal. John is active as a clinician and lecturer in colleges and high schools throughout the U.S. and abroad. He is a two-time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts award for Jazz Composition, and has served as a panelist for the NEA in the music category.
