2023 Voices of Distinction > The King's Singers The King’s Singers have represented the gold standard in a cappella singing on the world’s greatest stages for over fifty years. The King’s Singers were formed in 1968, when six recent choral scholars from King’s College, Cambridge gave a concert at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. By chance, the group was made up of two countertenors, a tenor, two baritones and a bass, and the group has maintained this formation ever since that debut.

Stephen Zegree | Hal Leonard Stephen Zegree Stephen Zegree (1953-2015) was the Bobby McFerrin Professor of Music at Western Michigan University where he taught classical and jazz piano; directed the Gold Company, an internationally recognized jazz vocal ensemble; and performed as pianist with the Western Jazz Quartet, the resident faculty jazz ensemble in the School of Music. The winner of numerous competitions, awards, and honors Dr. Zegree appeared as pianist, conductor, clinician, and adjudicator on five continents. He was a Steinway Artist. Gold Company, his vocal jazz ensemble, won over 45 awards from Down Beat magazine, more than any other college or university, and toured throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and performed at the MENC National Convention, numerous IAJE Conventions, World Symposium on Choral Music, and with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Janis Siegel, Jon Hendricks, Darmon Meader, Mark Murphy, Don Shelton, and Bonnie Herman. Dr. Zegree was a cum laude graduate of Miami University, where he earned the Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. He earned the Master of Music degree ""With Highest Distinction"" at Indiana University in piano and jazz, and completed doctoral studies in conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, which included tenure as conducting assistant to Dr. Eph Ehly. Dr. Zegree's choral arrangements are published by Hal Leonard Music Publications, Shawnee Press, and others. He authored the book The Wow Factor: How to Create It, Inspire It and Achieve It, published by Hal Leonard. He also co-produced jazz vocalist Mark Murphy's Nat King Cole Songbook, which was nominated for a Grammy® Award. A renowned educator, his students are among today's leaders in jazz and pop performance, Broadway, recording studio production, writing, arranging, singing, and music education.

Harburg Overview / Synopsis On a spring day in Rainbow Valley, the Sheriff is about to auction off a parcel of land for non-payment of taxes. Property owner Susan Mahoney, who was born silent, delays the auction until her brother Woody can arrive ("This Time of the Year"). Susan heads off to meet Woddy's train as Finian and his daughter Sharon arrive from Ireland ("How Are Things in Glocca Morra?). Finian reveals that he has "borrowed" a leprechaun's gold and plans to bury it so it will grow into more money. Finally Woody arrives (Woody's Entrance) and, with a little help from Sharon, pays off the debt. To show his thanks for the help, Woody gives Sharon and Finian a share of the land. Finian now has a place to bury his gold. Sharon tells the people of Rainbow Valley about her home ("Look to the Rainbow") and soon she and her father are welcomed in like old friends. That evening Og, the leprechaun, shows up demanding that Finian return his stolen gold. Og is scared away when Sharon and Woody arrive looking for Finian ("Old Devil Moon"). The next morning, knowing that gold has been found in Rainbow Valley, the Senator tries to buy the land now owned by Finian, but Finian will not sell. Before leaving, the Senator disparages the workers on the land for "looking different" than him. Sharon is washing clothes ("How Are Things In Glocca Morra? - Reprise") when she is approached by Og, who is quite smitten with her (Something Sort of Grandish). Og hides as Woody approaches. The lovers begin to quarrel, but they are interrupted by the arrival of friends. Finian has hatched a plan to get Woody betrothed to his daughter ("We're Havin' a Party", "Sharon's Getting Betrothed", "Woody's Getting Betrothed"). Woody and Sharon tries to buy the land again, he makes bigoted comments about the "rainbow-colored" Sharecroppers. Sharon is not happy and wishes the Senator looked just like the Sharecroppers and, because she is standing over the buried gold, the wish comes true. A Sharecropper announces that gold has been found in Rainbow Valley ("That Great Come-And-Get-It Day"). Finian and Woody convince the Sharecroppers not to dig for it, but once Susan is alone, she discovers Finian's gold and moves it ("Dance of the Golden Crock"). A few weeks later, the people of Rainbow Valley are rejoicing ("When the Idle Poor Become the Idle Rich"), and Finian has convinced Sharon and Woody to marry. The Sheriff enters and threatens a murder charge on Susan if the Senator, who has not returned since Sharon "changed" him, is not found by Tuesday. In the woods, Og encounters the transformed Senator and realizes that what he really needs is a new inside ("Fiddle-Faddle"), not outside. The "cured" Senator is happy again and is soon welcomed as a member of the Passion Pilgrim Gospeleers ("The Begat"). Just before the deadline, Finian finds Og and pleads with him to change the Senator back. Og doesn't know where the gold is, but when he mistakes SUsan for Sharon ("When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love") he falls in love with her. As Og searches for his gold, he wishes Susan could speak as she might know where the gold is hidden. His wish comes true, and Og realizes where his gold is buried. Og decides to stay mortal so he can be with Susan, and uses the last wish to change the Senator back. Sharon and Woody are saved and the Senator returns a changed man. Finian sets off to keep hope alive throughout the world ("Look to the Rainbow (Reprise)", "Finale Ultimo/How Are Things in Glocca Morra?", "Curtain Act II/That Great Come-And-Get It Day"). During the show, the Senator magically changes into a different man (on the outside), and by the end of the show, even though his appearance changes back to his original form, the Senator learns to be a kind and caring person. Don Marsh | Hal Leonard Don Marsh An award-winning arranger and composer, Don Marsh has been in the publishing and recording business for over 25 years. Don has arranged and produced over 200 choral collections, anthems and musicals for both adults and children, many of which are a collaboration with his wife Lorie. Born in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1943, Don began his music studies with a Bachelor of Music degree from Nyack College, Nyack, NY and continued with a Master of Arts in Music Composition from Glassboro State College, Glassboro, NJ. Don is the recipient of a Dove Award and five nominations including 1996 Musical of the Year and 1996 Children's Musical of the Year. With two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Achievement Composer/Arranger, an Angel Award for Excellence in Media, as well as an RIAA Gold Record Award, it is evident that Don is regarded as one of the top arranger/composers in the industry. Don has served as a Minister of Music in several large churches across the country and now is a free-lance arranger and composer. Don and his wife, Lorie have three children and reside in Franklin, Tennessee. Don also has four sons that reside in Denver, Colorado.

Ruth Elaine Schram | Hal Leonard Ruth Elaine Schram Ruth Elaine Schram (b.1956) wrote her first song at the age of twelve, and her first octavo was published twenty years later, in 1988. In 1992, she became a full-time composer and arranger and now has over 1,700 published works. Over sixteen million copies of her songs have been purchased in their various venues, and she has been a recipient of the ASCAP Special Award each year since 1990. In addition to her choral music for church and school choirs, her songs appear on thirty albums (four of which have been Dove Award Finalists) and numerous children's videos, including sixteen songs on four gold videos, and four songs on one multi-platinum video. Her songs have also appeared on such diverse television shows as ""The 700 Club"" and HBO's acclaimed series ""The Sopranos."" Ruthie began piano and theory lessons at the age of five. She studied music at Lancaster Bible College and Millersville State College and taught Elementary Music in Pennsylvania for several years. She now lives in Birmingham, Alabama with her husband, Scott, and they have two grown daughters, Crystie and Celsie.

Keith Christopher | Hal Leonard Keith Christopher Keith Christopher is actively involved in music as a composer, arranger, orchestrator and producer. His musical roots go back to Wylie, Texas, where he grew up playing trumpet in band, accompanying in church, and singing in the church youth choir. After high school, he studied music theory and composition and conducting. He holds a Master of Music in Composition from Southern Methodist University where he was a Graduate Assistant in the music theory and choral departments. His composition teachers include Francis W. McBeth, Newell K. Brown, and Simon Sargon. His music has been performed worldwide by choirs, orchestras, and bands at places including the National Christmas tree lighting, Hollywood Bowl, All-State concerts, and many other symphony and concert halls and festival stages. Mr. Christopher has received a yearly award for his publications from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers since 1992. In 1999 he received the famed Gold Record Award for “A Merry Christmas with Brass,” which features The Dallas Brass. In 2003 he received a Dove Award for the choral collection, “More Songs for Praise and Worship.” In addition, he has produced over a thousand recordings for music publishers. John Williams | Hal Leonard John Williams In a career spanning more than six decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films, including all nine Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone and The Book Thief. His nearly 50-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, Lincoln, The BFG and The Post. His contributions to television music include scores for more than 200 television films for the groundbreaking, early anthology series Alcoa Theatre, Kraft Television Theatre, Chrysler Theatre and Playhouse 90, as well as themes for NBC Nightly News (“The Mission”), NBC’s Meet the Press, and the PBS arts showcase Great Performances. He also composed themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. He has received five Academy Awards and fifty-two Oscar nominations, making him the Academy’s most-nominated living person and the second-most nominated person in the history of the Oscars. He has received seven British Academy Awards (BAFTA), twenty-five Grammys, four Golden Globes, five Emmys, and numerous gold and platinum records. In 2003, he received the Olympic Order (the IOC’s highest honor) for his contributions to the Olympic movement. He received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in December of 2004. In 2009, Mr. Williams was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and he received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the U.S. Government. In 2016, he received the 44th Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute – the first time in their history that this honor was bestowed upon a composer. In 2020, he received Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, as well as the Gold Medal from the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society in the UK. In January 1980, Mr. Williams was named nineteenth music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler. He currently holds the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor which he assumed following his retirement in December 1993 after fourteen highly successful seasons. He also holds the title of Artist-in-Residence at Tanglewood. Mr. Williams has composed numerous works for the concert stage, among them two symphonies, and concertos commissioned by several of the world’s leading orchestras, including a cello concerto for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a bassoon concerto for the New York Philharmonic, a trumpet concerto for The Cleveland Orchestra, and a horn concerto for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 2009, the Boston Symphony premiered his concerto for harp and orchestra entitled “On Willows and Birches”, and in the same year, Mr. Williams composed and arranged “Air and Simple Gifts” especially for the first inaugural ceremony of President Barack Obama.

Eugenie Rocherolle | Hal Leonard Eugenie Rocherolle Composer, lyricist, pianist, and teacher, Eugenie Rocherolle began an early career in publishing with choral and band music. In 1978, with the success of her first piano solo collection, she soon established herself as one of the leading American composers of piano repertoire. Her music is widely distributed throughout the United States and abroad. A native of New Orleans, she graduated from Newcomb College of Tulane University with a BA in music. Her junior year was spent in Paris where she had a class with the late Nadia Boulanger. She was honored as the 1995 outstanding Newcomb alumna. A "Commissioned by Clavier" composer, she was also one of seven composer members of the National League of American Pen Women whose works were chosen to be presented in a concert at the Terrace Theater of the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C. Awards from the Pen Women include a first place for both piano and choral in biennial national competitions. Mrs. Rocherolle's creative output also includes works for solo voice, chorus, and orchestra; musical theater; and chamber music for a variety of mediums. She is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP); Connecticut Composers Inc.; and the National Federation of Music Clubs. Her biographical profile appears in the International Who's Who in Music, Baker's Biographical Dictionary of 20th Century Classical Musicians, International Encyclopedia of Women Composers, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in the East. Mrs. Rocherolle has released recordings of her piano music, Spinning Gold and Romancing the Piano, and her Christmas arrangements, Tidings of Joy, on an independent label, Aureus Recordings. Robert Buckley | Hal Leonard Robert Buckley Robert Buckley has a diverse career as a composer, arranger, performer, producer, recording artist and conductor. In the pop world, he created several albums and hit songs with labels such as CBS and A&M. The number one single “Letting Go” won him a gold record. He conducted and arranged for major artists such as Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan and Aerosmith, to name a few. In the film and television world, he scored numerous award-winning shows for Disney, Alliance, ABC, FOX, CBS, PBS, CBC and the Cartoon Network. In the live stage world, he composed music for contemporary dance, musicals and large-scale worldwide television events including the Calgary Olympics, the Victoria Commonwealth Games, the Vancouver Olympics and the FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony with Cirque Du Soleil. He composed “This Is My Home” for the Canadian Pavilion at the World Expo – a song that has been performed at every Canada Day since and has become a Canadian tradition. In the concert world, his symphonic compositions have been performed worldwide. Robert has served as composer-in-residence at several universities and for many years at the Con Brio Whistler Music Festival. He has recorded several CDs of his symphonic wind music: “Continuum”, “Undercurrents”, “Seas Of The Moon” and most recently recorded his Third Symphony “Quebec Mosaic” with the Royal 22nd Regiment Band in Quebec City. Joan Tower | Hal Leonard Joan Tower Joan Tower is widely regarded as one of the most important American composers living today. During a career spanning more than fifty years, she has made lasting contributions to musical life in the United States as composer, performer, conductor, and educator. Her works have been commissioned by major ensembles, soloists, and orchestras, including the Emerson, Tokyo, and Muir quartets; soloists Evelyn Glennie, Carol Wincenc, David Shifrin, Paul Neubauer, and John Browning; and the orchestras of Chicago, New York, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Nashville, Albany, and Washington D.C. among others. In 2019 the League of American Orchestras awarded her its highest honor, the Gold Baton, at the League's 74th national conference. Tower is the first composer chosen for a Ford Made in America consortium commission of sixty-five orchestras. Leonard Slatkin and the Nashville Symphony recorded Made in America in 2008 (along with Tambor and Concerto for Orchestra). The album collected three Grammy awards: Best Contemporary Classical Composition, Best Classical Album, and Best Orchestral Performance. Nashville’s latest all-Tower recording includes Stroke, which received a 2016 Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. In 1990 she became the first woman to win the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Silver Ladders, a piece she wrote for the St. Louis Symphony where she was Composer-in-Residence from 1985-88. Other residencies with orchestras include a 10-year residency with the Orchestra of St. Luke's (1997-2007) and the Pittsburgh Symphony (2010-11). She was the Albany Symphony’s Mentor Composer partner in the 2013-14 season. Tower was cofounder and pianist for the Naumburg Award-winning Da Capo Chamber Players from 1970-85. She has received honorary doctorates from Smith College, the New England Conservatory, and Illinois State University. John La Barbera | Hal Leonard John La Barbera John La Barbera started playing cornet when he was five; by the age of seven he was performing with his parents and brothers Pat and Joe in the La Barbera Family Band, and by the late sixties he was playing trumpet and touring the world in the great Buddy Rich Orchestra. This was the beginning of his 19-year association with Buddy as his principal composer/arranger. John’s studies at the S.U.N.Y at Potsdam, Berklee College, the Eastman School of Music, and private study with Rayburn Wright contributed to his love of writing and strengthened his skills for a career in composition and arranging. He went on to play and write for many renowned big bands and is now one of the most respected composer/arrangers in jazz. His works have been recorded and performed by Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Tormé, Chaka Khan, Harry James, Bill Watrous, Bill Perkins, Al Cohn and Phil Woods, to name just a few. John's Grammy-nominated big band CD On The Wild Side, Fantazm, and his latest Caravan have been met with tremendous artistic and commercial success. As co-producer and arranger for The Glenn Miller Orchestra Christmas recordings (In The Christmas Mood I & II), he has received Gold, Double and Triple Platinum records. He is a co-founder of the internationally acclaimed women’s big band DIVA, and has contributed work as an orchestrator for Broadway shows, with A Chorus Line being the most notable. A former Director of Jazz Ensembles at Cornell University, Mr. La Barbera is now Professor Emeritis of Music at the University of Louisville, where he implemented and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in composition and arranging, TV and film scoring, and music industry. During his seven-year term as jazz editor of the International Trumpet Guild, his interviews with the world's leading jazz trumpet artists were a regular feature of the ITG Journal. John is active as a clinician and lecturer in colleges and high schools throughout the U.S. and abroad. He is a two-time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts award for Jazz Composition, and has served as a panelist for the NEA in the music category. Crawford R. Thoburn | Hal Leonard Crawford R. Thoburn More than one hundred of Crawford R. Thoburn's choral compositions, arrangements, and editions have been published. Choirs across the U.S. and throughout the world sing his music, with performances noted in Nova Scotia, British Columbia, England, Germany, Austria, France, South Africa, Singapore, India, and Taiwan. Professional, church, and college groups record his works, which have been broadcast on National Public Radio and Public Radio International. At Wells College in Aurora NY, Crawford R. Thoburn is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. His student choral groups have won international awards in juried competition, performed by invitation at ACDA conventions and MENC meetings, toured in the U.S. and Europe, performed with many other college groups, and sung with professional orchestras. He has conducted numerous inter-collegiate choral collaborations, and enjoys a national reputation for expertise in women's choral literature and performance. Professor Thoburn has a B.A. from Allegheny College, where he studied theory, arranging, and conducting with Morten J. Luvaas. In 1999, the Allegheny Alumni Association selected him to receive its prestigious Gold Citation, ""in recognition and appreciation of the honor reflected upon the college by virtue of his professional achievements."" At Boston University, Professor Thoburn received a M.M. and worked as an assistant to his instructor in voice and conducting, Allen C. Lannom. He later studied choral and orchestral conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller, Margaret Hillis, and Robert Shaw. While on a year-long sabbatical leave, he was a member of and soloist with the St. Martin Singers of London, England, under the direction of W. D. Kennedy-Bell. Crawford served on the first National Committee on Editorial Standards of the American Choral Directors Association. His scholarly articles have appeared in the American Choral Review, Wells College Express and the Choral Journal, where he headed the Choral Review Department for five years. At Wells, Professor Thoburn chaired the Music Department, the Division of the Arts, the Centennial Committee, the New Arts Facilities Committee, the Summer College Program, and the Faculty Advisory Committee, and he was named the first Campbell Professor of the Arts. Off campus, Crawford has served many years as a choral director for Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Episcopalian congregations. Michael Abene | Hal Leonard Michael Abene Michael Abene is a composer, arranger, keyboard player and record producer. Michael joined the Maynard Ferguson band while still a teenager and was responsible for writing some of the most-requested arrangements, such as "Green Dolphin Street," "Airegin," "Fox Hunt," "Chicago," "Whisper Not," "Knarf" and "Cherokee." Michael produced the Grammy-winning projects "Digital Duke" featuring the Duke Ellington Orchestra and "The GRP All-Star Big Band-All Blues." He produced the Grammy-nominated "GRP All-Star Big Band" and "The GRP All-Star Big Band Live" and received nominations in the arranging category for all three big band records. Other projects he has produced are "The GRP Christmas Collection Volumes 1, 2 and 3" (Volume 1 was awarded a gold record for sales of 500,000 units), "Happy Anniversary, Charlie Brown," two projects for Billy Taylor, "... It's a matter of pride" and "Homage," "Maiden Voyage" for Nnenna Freelon plus projects for Billy Cobham, Eddie Daniels and Dave Valentin. Some of the other artists Michael has composed and arranged for are Take 6, Joe Lovano, Bireli Lagrene, Montreal fusion bassist Alain Caron, Dick Oatts, Dave Grusin, for which he received a 1998 Grammy nomination for the arrangement of "America" from "Dave Grusin Presents West Side Story," Chick Corea, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Liza Minnelli, Charles Aznavour, Dave Taylor, Ronnie Cuber, Diva, the Metropole Jazz Orchestra in the Netherlands and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. Michael has also appeared as featured pianist and arranger/composer with the UMO Jazz Orchestra in Helsinki, WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany, the Rotterdam Conservatory Big Band (The Netherlands), Jazz Big Band Graz (Austria), Kluvers Big Band (Denmark) and the BBC Big Band in England. Michael also has produced and arranged for many singers, from pop and crossover artists Patti Austin and B.B. King, to classic jazz artists Grady Tate, Joe Williams, Chris Connor, New York Voices and Diane Schuur. Two works of Michael's were premiered during the summer of 2000: a piece he arranged for The Metropole Jazz Orchestra for seven trombones where each trombonist contributed an original and Michael composed opening and connecting sections allowing the piece to be played as a suite. This composition was performed at the International Trombone Festival in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The second composition was an original work commissioned by The Mancini Institute, where Michael has appeared as composer-in-residence, for bass trombonist Dave Taylor entitled "Heritage: New/Old and Then Some" and performed by The Mancini Institute Orchestra and Big Band. This work has also been performed by The Manhattan School of Music Studio Jazz Orchestra and in 2004 by The Amsterdam Conservatory Orchestra and Big Band. Two new compositions by Michael premiered in 2003 were "Odyssey for Brass," commissioned and performed by The Metropole Jazz Orchestra in Tilburg, The Netherlands and "Fragmentations" performed by the Slovenian Symphony and Radio Big Band. In the fall of 2003 Michael was appointed Musical Director, Principal Composer/Arranger of the WDR Radio Big Band of Cologne, Germany. Because of the response worldwide, Michael has made his compositions and arrangements available to schools and bands and serves as a clinician, and is currently working on his own 11-piece band consisting of two trumpets, french horn, tenor and bass trombone, three reeds and rhythm section. Michael joined the faculty of Manhattan School of Music in January 1998. In 2001 Michael was instrumental in creating a course entitled "Jazz Composition and Arranging for The Studio Orchestra" and in 2003, a Doctoral in Jazz program. He is bookish, careful and thoughtful, but he is NOT a nerd! Jack has tremendous curiosity about the world around him and loves to take notes about his observations. Jack tends to be very cautious in new situations, and his adventures in the tree house help him develop his confidence. He has a good (and protective) relationship with his younger sister, Annie, though her more impetuous nature often gets on his nerves. This is a big role and requires a strong singer and actor. Gender: Male Vocal Range: C4-D5 Annie Annie is Jack's younger sister and, in many ways, his opposite in terms of personality. She is a risk-taker who often follows her heart instead of her head. She sometimes teases Jack about his careful attitude toward life and encourages him to be more adventurous. She loves animals of any kind and has a very loving heart. Like Jack, this role requires strong singing and acting. When auditioning, you might mix and match your Jack and Annie hopefuls to see which ones have the best brother-sister chemistry. Gender: Female Vocal Range: C4-E5 Morgan/Polly Morgan is an ageless librarian enchantress. By the end of the play, Jack and Annie learn that the Magic Tree House belongs to Morgan. Morgan magically turns herself into Polly so that she can try to help the kids on this adventure, so for most of the show, Morgan will be costumed as a parrot. Look for an actor who can move easily in a more elaborate costume for most of the show. Although she doesn't speak or sing until the end, this large and important part requires one of your most mature female performers with both strong singing and acting skills. Gender: Female Vocal Range: A3-C5 First Mate The First Mate enjoys being in charge of his crew and must jumpstart the play with a commanding first line. He has solo singing lines and also helps to narrate the story, so cast an actor with a strong speaking and singing voice. This character can be played by a male or female actor. Gender: Both Vocal Range: Bb3-D5 Captain Bones Captain Bones is the epitome of a fearsome, odious pirate. He enjoys being vile and mean. Look for an actor who isn't afraid to really put himself out there - one who has both a physical and vocal swagger. Consider casting your strongest comic performer for this role - the absurd comedic tone of the play is highly dependent on Bones. If possible, it would be fun to cast an actor who is smaller in stature than his minions to highlight the comedy of his bullish ways. Although Bones does sing a solo part on "How Do You Do, I'm Captain Bones (Part 2)," those lines can be spoken, so if you have a kid who is a talented actor but a less-experienced singer, this role would be good for him. Captain Bones can be played by either a girl or a boy as long as the actor has a commanding stage presence and great comedic timing. Gender: Both Vocal Range: B3-C#5 Pinky, Stinky, Blinky and Slinky Pinky, Stinky, Blinky and Slinky are henchmen for Captain Bones. Though these pirates are devoted to Bones, they are not nearly as clever or mean. These large speaking roles all require good comedic timing. These roles are good for kids who will relish being able to dress and talk like a pirate in front of their peers. Look for strong actors who can carry a tune, are good at focusing and taking direction and who are capable of working together as a team. Cast males, females or both. Gender: Both Vocal Range: C4-B4 Jonah Jonah is a cabin boy who wants to help Jack and Annie escape from Bones. In stark contrast to the Pirates, he is kind, soft-spoken and tender-hearted. While being held captive, Jack and Annie teach Jonah how to read. Jonah's solo parts in "Reading a Book" require a strong singer, and the role requires an actor capable of quiet subtlety, so if possible, cast one of your strong performers in this role. If you are short on boys, cast a girl to play a boy. Gender: Both Vocal Range: C4-D5 Billy, Molly, Nathaniel, Wilhelmina, Peter, Pirates Billy, Molly, Nathaniel, Wilhelmina, Peter, and additional Pirates are the often funny and spirited Pirates under the command of Captain Bones. The named Pirates should be the strongest actors and singers of this group. If you don't have enough boys to play Billy and Nathaniel, cast girls who would have fun playing a boy. Casting extra Pirates is a good way to round out the chorus and to utilize performers who are less experienced. She is the matriarch of the Island Creatures on this particular Caribbean island. Cast an actor who enjoys the spotlight and who is physically uninhibited - someone who has good vocal and movement skills and isn't afraid to "get into the groove" of the "Tropical Island Song." Gender: Female Vocal Range: Bb3-Eb5 Pedro the Pelican Pedro the Pelican is a prim and proper pelican. Although not a large role, Pedro has a few solo lines. It might be comedic to watch this rather rigid, self-conscious bird get lured into the groove of "The Tropical Island Song" until he or she is the most enthusiastic dancer of them all. Cast an actor who can play shy but who isn't afraid to dance and let loose on stage. Gender: Male Stella the Starfish Stella the Starfish is a sweet, happy starfish who loves to dance. Stella has a few solo lines, so look for an actor who has a strong voice and can lead the other Starfish in a dance. Gender: Female Island Creatures Island Creatures including Pelican #1, Pelican #2, Pelican #3, Lizard #1, Lizard #2, Lizard #3, Corey the Crab, Starfish Partner, Additional Crabs, Lobsters, Starfish and Jellyfish sing "The Tropical Island Song" and "Treasure." Cast as many performers as your stage and program will allow.
